The Madison College men's basketball team upped their unbeaten streak to four games Wednesday night, but just barely. The WolfPack edged out UW-Rock County by a single point, 89-88.
So, for now, the team's winning ways continue, thanks in large part to freshman forward
Jerrod Walton. Walton scored 22 of his 28 points in the second half.
"We were all missing shots, as a team, in the first half," said the 6-foot-6 Walton. "I think as the momentum rose, we rose as a team, and it made me rise as a player."
Entering the halftime break, Madison College found itself down five points. Luckily, after hitting just 21 percent of their shots in the first 20 minutes, the team doubled its field goal percentage in the second. The end result was the previously mentioned one-point victory.
Trailing 84-79 with 1:07 left in the game, Madison College finished on a 10-4 run to close things out. Back 88-84, Walton buried a three-point attempt with 15 seconds left to bring his team within a single point. Nine second later, two free-throws by
Kris Seffrood would shut the door on UW-Rock County.
Two other members of the WolfPack joined Walton in scoring double-digits.
Antowan Epps added 16 points, while
Brian Bearden chipped in 12.
Offense wasn't the problem though. Defensively, Madison College allowed the Rattlers to knock down 43 percent of their shots.
"We allowed too many points today," said Walton. "88 is too many. We gotta play team defense. Talk more."
"I hope they learn from this," said WolfPack assistant coach
Sam Sternberg. "I hope they learn that they gotta come out of the gates ready to go."
Madison College (4-0) has already matched their win total from last season. Next up, the WolfPack will host Sauk Valley Community College Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m.
