Volleyball team continues to impress, still undefeated in conference play

The WolfPack volleyball team, still undefeated in conference play, played some challenging matches in this weekend's Harper College Invitational. As they have been doing all season, they rose to the occasion and ended the weekend with three wins and one loss.

Their first match, which was against Oakton Community College, was an across-the-board victory for Madison College. Katlynn Wirag racked up 13 digs and nine kills, while teammates Payton Klein and Vanessa Clarson had two aces apiece. These offensive leaders were assisted by Melinda Statz 11 times. Meanwhile, Mikayla Nigl and Danielle Crawford defended the 'Pack with two blocks each. They were accompanied by Sydney Clarson with another 13 digs.

For the second match, the WolfPack faced off against Lincoln Land College. The team didn't fare quite as well this time around, and lost the match 3-1. Nevertheless, they still worked just as hard as ever. Terissa Bierd had 15 kills and two aces, accompanied by teammate Hannah Grahn with an impressive 42 assists. Nigl had another two blocks and Vanessa Clarson pulled off 30 digs.

The 'Pack came back to play in the third match to take on John A. Logan College, an NJCAA DI team. Madison College proved that they've earned their spot at #1 when they emerged victorious with a 3-1 victory. Nigl led the team offensively with nine kills, as did Grahn with two aces and 31 assists. Crawford and Vanessa Clarson are credited with six blocks and 19 digs, respectively.

Madison College claimed a fourth and final victory in the match against Marshalltown Community College. Nigl put in another eight kills and two blocks, while Vanessa Clarson, Grahn, and Bierd each had two aces. Grahn additionally hammered out another 19 assists. Klein pulled off two blocks while Vanessa Clarson gave the team another 21 digs.

The tournament puts Madison College's record at 6-0 in conference play and 15-3 overall. They will return to their home court Tuesday, September 24 at 6 p.m. to take on the College of DuPage.
