Women's Basketball Dominates Second Straight Game

Box Score The WolfPack women's basketball team used a strong first half and a dominating second to defeat the Wilbur Wright College Rams in Chicago, IL on Saturday afternoon. The 39 point win (78 to 39) improved Madison's overall record that much closer to .500 at 8-11 and improved their N4C conference record to 3-1. The 3-1 'Pack are in third place in the N4C standings behind the Rock Valley Golden Eagles and the Joliet Wolves.

Madison College shot poorly from the floor in the first half (30%) and Wilbur Wright bested them shooting at 44 percent clip, but the 'Pack's seven point free throw advantage in the opening frame gave Madison the 33 to 24 halftime lead. After a few halftime adjustments, Madison College came out inspired and held a clear advantage in shooting from the field over the Rams. Madison made 45 percent of their shots from the floor and their stifling defense held the Wilbur Wright Rams to 16.6 percent to win the second half 45 to 15 and the game 78 to 39. The WolfPack's winning of a few more in-game battles was as important in the victory as the shooting advantage was. Madison outshot the Rams from the charity stripe (17 to 4), points in the paint (42 to 26), points of turnovers (22 to 9), and defensive stops (68 to 48).

Courtney Spangler was the big scorer for the 'Pack with 26 points on 11-of-22 shooting from the field, to go with 3-of-4 shooting at the line. She also grabbed 12 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the year, along with picking up five steals. Spangler tied for the team lead in that category, and five players on the team all amassed at least four steals as the 'Pack forced 42 Wilbur Wright turnovers to their 18. Taylor Pfeuti played second fiddle in scoring and added 19 points for the victors, as well as tying for the team lead with four assists while adding three steals. Nobody else reached double figures in scoring, but several contributed to the true team win. Calli Dahl and Chelsey Schulenburg both recorded four assists to tie with Pfeuti as the team recorded 21 helpers. Dahl also added five steals and the guard picked up the team's lone block, while Schulenburg added four steals. Ellyn Hayden also got into the mix with four steals, three assists, and five rebounds.

With two straight wins under their belt, both conference games, the 8-11 'Pack faces one of their toughest test of the season on Wednesday, January 23. Madison College travels to Rockford, IL to face the Rock Valley Golden Eagles who boast a 17-2 overall record and sit atop the N4C with a 3-0 record. The game against the #2 ranked team in the country starts at 5:30 PM.
