The Madison College volleyball team picked up two come-from-behind five set wins at the UW-Whitewater Invitational on Saturday, October 20 by defeating the host Whitewater Warhawks 13-25, 24-26, 25-23, 33-31, 15-13, and the Illinois Valley Community College Eagles 22-25, 21-25, 26-24, 25-21, 15-13. In both matches, Madison College fell behind early after losing the first two sets before roaring back for the big wins. With the match victories in hand, the young Madison College volleyball team improves to 22-4 overall. The WolfPack were ranked by the NJCAA in Division III and Region IV volleyball #6 in the nation. With four big wins since their last ranking Madison looks to improve on their last placement in the polls.
In their first tournament match against the NCAA DIII UW-Whitewater JV team, the WolfPack used 58 team kills to overcome a 0-2 set deficit in picking up the comeback win with three consecutive high-scoring set victories (25-23, 33-31, 15-13). The trio of
Terissa Bierd (17),
Morgan Ellickson (15), and
Payton Klein (11) recorded 43 of the team's 58 kills against the Warhawks, while
Alexis Semrow did most of the assisting as she amassed an amazing 44 assists in the five set match. Bierd and
Danielle Crawford both recorded two service aces in further aiding the offense, and the defense did their part as well. Bierd registered another team lead, this time in digs with 23.
Vanessa Clarson wasn't far behind as she put up 22 digs, and
Morgan Ellickson also finished in double-digit digs with 13.
Kayla Voorhees paced the team in blocks as she recorded two (1 solo block and 2 block assists), followed by both
Payton Klein and Crawford who record three block assists for 1.5 blocks.
Madison College's second match of the UW-Whitewater Invitational started of eerily similar to their first. The WolfPack fell behind 0-2 in the first two sets against the Illinois Valley Community College Eagles after dropping the two games to start the match, 22-25 and 21-25. The 'Pack's high-powered offense and timely defense contributed to their second straight come-from-behind win in five sets as the team won three straights games in close fashion, 26-24, 25-21, 15-13. Four players, led by
Kayla Voorhees' 14, combined for 48 of the team's 57 kills in the win over the NJCAA DII team.
Payton Klein (12),
Morgan Ellickson (11), and
Terissa Bierd (11) also put up big kill numbers, while
Alexis Semrow provided 45 of the team's 51 assists. Semrow's 45 match assists marks the third straight match she has reached at least 40, and the seventh straight game she has led the team in the category. Bierd also led the team in service aces as she recorded three. On the defensive side of the court,
Vanessa Clarson once again paced the squad with a team-high 45 digs. Ellickson (19), Bierd (17), and Semrow also finished in double-digits as the team recorded a whopping 107 digs. Voorhees, Semrow, and
Danielle Crawford all recorded two block assists to lead the team in that defensive category and Voorhees added a solo block to finish with two blocks.
Your 22-4 Madison College volleyball team has one last regular season game before the NJCAA Region IV Quarterfinals on October 24. The WolfPack takes on the Western Technical College Cavaliers in La Crosse, WI on Monday, October 22 in their regular season finale. The match against Western starts at 6:00 PM. The team then has a day off before hosting the College of DuPage on Wednesday, October 24 in both teams' post-season opener. The WolfPack are seeded #3 in the Region IV Tournament and will play host to the #6 seeded and 6-17 College of DuPage Chaparrals. The home play-off game starts at 6:00 PM.
