WolfPack Play Three in Rochester

Kirsten Halma had 61 assists for the WolfPack in the tournament.
The Madison College women's volleyball team spent Sept. 11 playing in the Rochester Community & Technical College Tournament where they played three matches in one day. After winning the first two matches, the WolfPack fell to the tournament host in a third and decisive set.

To open the tournament, the No. 5 ranked WolfPack faced off against the Viterbo University JV squad, an NCAA Division III team. They took care of business and got the sweep 25-14, 25-9, 25-16. The three-set win allowed the WolfPack win their fiteenth-straight set. First-year player Kirsten Halma put in a dominating performance for the WolfPack by recording 20 assists and nine digs. Skye Kapinus added eight kills to lead the offense and Ashley Biesterveld had a hot hand as she served up four aces.

Following the Viterbo JV victory, the WolfPack had an early scare against Riverland Community College edging the Blue Devils 25-23 in the first set only to follow that narrow margin with a commanding 25-8 win. The WolPack rounded out the match with a 25-17 win thanks to big performances out of Halma and Biesterveld. Halma put up 24 assists in the match while Biesterveld blasted the ball by racking up 17 kills and 8 digs.

In their final match of the tournament, the WolfPack lost a match and a set for the first time in seven games 25-15, 21-25, 12-15. Rochester Community & Technical College - the No. 4 ranked team in the country - snapped a 19-set winning streak for the WolfPack by taking the final two sets of the match on their home floor. It was also the first NJCAA Division III loss of the season for the WolfPack.

The first-year players stepped up and put in solid performances despite losing two of three sets. Setters Leah Monti and Halma each had 17 assists while Calli Dahl and Hannah Schwartzer each recorded 11 digs for the WolfPack. Biesterveld led the team in kills for the second-consecutive match with 15.

Things will not get any easier in the WolfPack in their next mtach as they travel to Rockford, Ill. on Sept. 14 to take on Rock Vally College - the third ranked team in the country - just three days after battling the fourth ranked team in the country. The last time these teams met resulted in a WolfPack win when a trip to the national tournament was on the line. This match is the first of two scheduled meetings between the teams.
