Tony Winscher is the only returning player this season for the WolfPack.
The Madison College soccer team traveled to Kankakee Ill. to open up the 2010 season and never got things going against Kankakee Community College on Aug. 28. in a 16-0 loss. The WolfPack fell behind 5-0 through the first half of play and allowed 11 goals in the second half of the game.
The game was tied 0-0 through the first 15 minutes of play and at the 15:34 mark, the Cavaliers scored their first goal and never trailed after that point of the game. After falling behind by five goals at halftime, the WolfPack gave up two goals in the first two minutes of the second half, giving themselves an even bigger deficit to climb out from.
The biggest difference in the game was the 31-2 shots on goal advantage the Cavaliers held over the WolfPack. A 29 shots on goal differential is a nightmare for any goalie, let alone a first-year player making his first career start. While
Eric Liegel allowed 16 goals, he stayed in the entire game and did make 11 saves.
The WolfPack felt the loss of all but one player from last season's squad in their season-opening game against the Cavaliers. The lone returning player for the 2010 season is defender
Tony Winscher. The WolfPack do not have all three of their All-Region players from last season, which includes leading scorer
Thiemoko Kone, leading assist man
Serigne Sarr and their defensive stopper
James Bethke. The young WolfPack team will need to some new leaders to emerge as the season rolls on.
There will be a chance for redemption for the WolfPack against the Cavaliers on Sept. 19 at home and will have seven games in between from now until then including three games against NJCAA Division I opponents. It is a long season and the WolfPack have a little over two months to develop a higher level of team chemistry and reach the level of play that they are capable of.
The WolfPack have their next game and home opener against Triton College on Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 4:00 p.m.
