WICHITA, KANS. - One corner kick sequence was denied. One corner kick sequence went in. And with that, the #9-seeded Madison College men's soccer team saw their dream season come to an end with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss on a golden goal in double overtime against #4-seeded and defending national champion Northeast Community College on Monday. The WolfPack, despite controlling the ball for a majority of both game and leading in many key statistical categories, went 0-2 in their debut appearance at the
2025 NJCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championships and finished the year with an 18-2-1 record.
Madison College was the aggressor early, generating a shot by
Rodrigo Lasso that went high.
Cole Rogers followed in the 16' with a shot that was turned away by the Hawks goalkeeper. Early in the match's 37', the WolfPack appeared to take a 1-0 lead; however, the goal by Rogers was nullified by an offsides call.
In the second half, the Pack continued to play their game, while also withstanding a few more shots by Northeast (15-4-1). Following another save on a shot by Lasso, freshman goalkeeper
Caylen Coventry came up with his first save of the match in the 54'.
Geo Prado's only scoring opportunity in the 70' was blocked by a defender, and
Alfonso Mendez came up empty in the 87' to send the match to extra time.
The Hawks best scoring opportunity of the match came early in the first overtime with a one-on-one opportunity against Coventry; however, the native of Barcelona, Spain, made a sliding deflection to keep the match going. Fellow first year
Josh Kiltz earned a couple of cracks at the net before Rogers was denied yet again. With time ticking down in the first OT, Madison received a free kick deep in the right corner that resulted in a header by Lasso. As it appeared headed for the net, the NCC 'keeper punched it out as the horn sounded.
With both teams willing themselves towards the finish line, Northeast took a corner kick in the 106' and it resulted in the ball being kicked in for the game-winning golden goal.
For the match, Madison College produced a 9-6 lead in total shots and a 6-5 edge in shots on goal, while also producing a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Lasso led the way with three shots, followed by two each from Rogers and Kiltz. Lasso, a midfielder from Panama City, Panama, and Rogers, a midfielder from Auckland, New Zealand, both delivered two shots on goal.
Coventry was credited with three saves.
Northeast and CCBC Essex, who narrowly beat the WolfPack 3-2 on Sunday, will play Tuesday night to decide the Pool D winner in the national semifinals.
