Three Second Half Goals Not Enough

The Madison College soccer season came to an end in the quarterfinals of the Region IV Tournament on Oct. 20 in Milwaukee. The WolfPack scored three second half goals, but still came up short in the 6-3 loss against Milwaukee Area Technical College.

The WolfPack didn't help themselves early in the game, falling behind 1-0 just nine minutes into the game. At the end of one half of play, they had dug themselves in a 3-0 hole. However, the WolfPack did not go down without a fight in the second half.

Marco Gonzalez scored his first goal of the season two minutes and 23 seconds into the half and pumped some life into the WolfPack offense. Just three minutes later, the WolfPack struck again and drew within a goal of the Stormers on a William Cooper goal.

The score remained the same for 15 minutes until the Stormers came back with two quick strikes of their own to pull away from the WolfPack for good.

Andrew Cook, who assisted an earlier goal, scored a goal of his own in the 84th minute of the game, but it came too late as the WolfPack were still down by three and were held scorless in the game's final six minutes.

The WolfPack offense, which had played better down the stretch in the regular season, only scored one goal against the Stormers in two previous games earlier this year. So the three goals in the second half was a good sign for the young WolfPack team. The only problem was that they entered the second half amidst a three-goal deficit.

Goalie Eric Liegel had four saves in the game while allowing the six Stormer goals. He set a single season record at Madison College for saves this year with 131. He started and played the entirity of all 17 games this season in the goalie box for the WolfPack.

The team had its ups and downs in the 2010 season, but if the WolfPack's resilience in this game and the entire season is any indication of how hard the athletes on the team will work in the offseason, then 2011 could be a big year for the WolfPack soccer team.

The WolfPack will be looking up towards next season as the young team will lose only one player, defender Tony Winscher. Everyone else from this year's team is eligible for one more season in the NJCAA, including some players who missed this season due to injury. The WolfPack will be looking to return a lineup that will not only have the potential to be amongst the top teams in the North Central Communtiy College Conference (N4C), but in all of Division III.
