Steve Bentin has served as the Madison Area Technical College head women’s basketball coach since the 2003-04 season.
Under Bentin, the 2005 team won the conference title and qualified for the NJCAA Division III National Tournament by winning the NJCAA Region XIII-B Championship. The team finished fourth at nationals, compiled a 23-8 record and Bentin received NJCAA District Coach-of-the-Year honors. In 2004, Bentin received WJCAA Coach-of-the-Year honors while his team claimed conference and state titles with a 23-6 overall record. His overall record at MATC is 46-14 and includes two conference titles, one state title, one region title and a fourth place national finish in just two seasons.
Prior to MATC, Bentin taught full-time in the Madison Metropolitan School District for 33 years. He retired from Madison West High School as a counselor in June 2003. Bentin coached girls basketball at Madison East for 15 years (12 years as head coach) and Madison West for nine seasons (seven years as head coach). His overall high school coaching record was an impressive 320-181. His teams made three state tournament appearances, placing second in Division I during the 1988-89 season.
Bentin received numerous high school coaching honors including Big Eight Coach-of-the-Year, Wisconsin State Journal Madison Coach-of-the-Year and he was selected as the head coach of the WBCA Girl’s Division I North All-Star Team.
Coach Bentin grew up in Detroit, MI. He received his B.S. degree from Wayne State University in 1966 and his M.S. degree from UW-Madison in Guidance/Counseling in 1984. He and his wife Maureen have three children.
