After serving as the Madison Area Technical College head women’s basketball coach for the last three years, Steve Bentin returned for his fourth season of coaching, and his first season as an assistant coach at MATC.
Bentin led the WolfPack to a record-shattering 32-2 season in 2005-2006 winning conference, state and region titles before finishing third in the country at the NJCAA Division III National Tournament. MATC maintained the nation’s #2 ranking throughout the regular season and Bentin was awarded NJCAA Region XIII-B Coach-of-the-Year as his team set a new school record for wins in a season including twenty-three consecutive wins stretching into the national tournament.
Prior to MATC, Bentin taught full-time in the Madison Metropolitan School District for 33 years. He retired from Madison West High School as a counselor in June 2003. While teaching, Bentin also coached at Madison East for 15 years (12 years as head coach) and Madison West for nine seasons (seven years as head coach). His overall high school coaching record was an impressive 320-181. His teams made three state tournament appearances, placing second in Division I during the 1988-89 season. Bentin received numerous high school coaching honors including Big Eight Coach-of-the-Year, Wisconsin State Journal Madison Coach-of-the-Year and he was selected as the head coach of the WBCA Girl’s Division I North All-Star Team.
Coach Bentin grew up in Detroit, MI. He received his B.S. degree from Wayne State University in 1966 and his M.S. degree from UW-Madison in Guidance/Counseling in 1984. He and his wife Maureen have three children.
