Greg Verhelst is in his first season as Madison Area Technical College assistant men’s basketball coach. Verhelst, the former head boy’s basketball coach at Verona High School, joins his brother on the MATC Men’s Basketball coaching staff. He coached the Verona boys varsity basketball team for 16 seasons, compiling a record of 195-154. This past season, Verona reached the WIAA Sectional Finals. Verhelst has also coached Verona H.S. boys golf for 20 years.
Coach Verhelst was a seven-time letterwinner in football, basketball, and baseball at Edgewood High School. After high school, Verhelst played basketball and baseball at MATC from 1973-1975, before transferring to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While at MATC, he was a member of the 1974-75 co-conference champion basketball team that went 10-2 in WTCC conference play.
Verhelst was born on August 27, 1955 in Mauston, WI. In 1978, he received his B.S. degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison in Education. He received his M.S. degree in Education Administration from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1985. In addition to coaching men’s basketball at MATC, Verhelst will continue as Physical Education/Health teacher, Assistant Athletic Director, and boys golf coach at Verona High School. His wife’s name is Mary and his daughters are Jamie, Megan, and Kaitlyn.
