MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College baseball team took care of business in game one of a non-region doubleheader Wednesday at Robin Roberts Field, only to have history made against them by Dakota County Technical College in the finale. The #6 WolfPack secured a 5-2 victory before Blue Knights pitcher Jayden Peterson threw a no-hitter over five innings in a run-ruled 15-0 defeat of the Pack. The all-time series between the two programs favors Madison College by a 4-3 margin.
Game #1: #6 Madison College 5, Dakota County Technical College 0
Madison College scored the game's first run in the opening inning. With two runners in scoring position and one out, sophomore outfielder
Quinn Falish grounded out to the shortstop, which was good enough for
Beau Bloxdorf to race in for a 1-0 lead. The advantage, however, was short-lived as Dakota County Technical College pulled even at 1-1 in the third on a sacrifice fly.
The WolfPack answered right back with a three-run bottom of the third. Back-to-back singles by Bloxdorf and
Nate Novinska got the frame started, once again setting up Falish for a RBI opportunity. He came through with a double to left to plate Bloxdorf. Third baseman
Ian Salvesen drove in Novinska on a groundout to third, and freshman DH
Paul Nuetzel singled to right to cap the inning as Falish crossed home to make it 4-1.
In the fifth, Nuetzel lined a single to center, and three batters later, first year catcher
Jonah Roloff delivered a run-scoring hit through the right side to plate Nuetzel.
The 5-1 differential was cut into in the seventh as DCTC used a single and a double to put runners in scoring position, and then brought one home on a sac fly. Reliever
Carter Lund then got a line drive out to Falish in right field to complete the victory.
Sophomore starter
Braycen Burg (2-1) held the Blue Knights to a run on four hits and a walk in his four innings as the Rubicon, Wisconsin, native, secured his first win since March 14. Lund earned a three-inning save, his first of the season, after striking out three batters and allowing a run on two hits and a walk.
Nuetzel, a native of Mequon, Wisconsin, was 2 for 3 with a run batted in and a run scored, while Novinska had two hits and scored a run. Roloff, a former Kettle Moraine HS athlete, also had a pair of hits for the fifth time this season, resulting in one run driven in.
Falish finish with a hit, a team-high two RBI, and scored once. Bloxdorf was tops with two runs scored on a hit and a walk.
Game #2: Dakota County Technical College 15, #6 Madison College 0 (5 innings)
The nightcap was all about Jayden Peterson of Dakota County Technical College (25-16), as the first year righthander pitcher from Blaine, Minnesota, locked down the WolfPack bats with a no-hitter in run-ruled shortened five innings. He struck out five and walked three as he secured the first no-hitter against a Madison College team coached by
Mike Davenport, and possibly even in more than 35 years.
While the Madison College bats were silenced, the Blue Knights offense came to life and tied for the most runs scored against the Pack this season. Two-run homers in the first and second innings made it 4-0, and after a run in the third, DCTC drove a solo homer over the fence in the fourth to make it 6-0. They added a run in the fifth before exploding for eight runs in the sixth to earn the run-ruled decision.
Freshman
Aaron Ploszay (3-2) took the loss and gave up five runs on three hits and three walks, as well as two hit batters over his three innings. Fellow first year
Jack Poellot took over and surrendered ten runs on nine hits and four walks in his three innings. The righty also struck out five batters, threw four wild pitches, and was called for a balk.
Sam Moses drew two walks, while
Chase Maika had one base on balls.
The loss wrapped up a 13-game homestand that saw the WolfPack go 10-3.
