WolfPack overcomes three-run deficit to beat USC Sumter

Schabel produces four hits, four RBI in come-from-behind victory

LITTLE RIVER, SO. CAR. - Despite an early three-run deficit, the Madison College softball team was able to rally for an 8-3 victory over USC Sumter on Saturday, snapping a brief two-game losing streak. Sophomore Hayden Schabel enjoyed a career game in leading the rally that saw the WolfPack scored eight unanswered runs over the final two innings. The Pack is now 2-0 all-time against the Fire Ants.

USC Sumter (5-24) got on the scoreboard first with three runs in the third inning. Second year pitcher Lauryn Etienne walked the first two batters, who then scored on a ground ball to right field. A ground out two batters later resulted in another run.

Madison College, which had left the bases loaded in the second and stranded two runners in the fourth, finally got on the board in the fifth. Freshmen Kelsey Meverden and Cassie Coffey each singled and advance an extra base on a passed ball. First year shortstop Sadie Svendsen drove a single up the middle to plate Meverden, and two batters later, Schabel roped a two-RBI double to the wall in right, scoring Coffey and Svendsen to even the score at 3-3.

In the bottom of the sixth, the WolfPack used an error and a walk to put runners on for Coffey, who delivered a ground out to first for the go-ahead run to score. Svendsen followed with a single to left, scoring Meverden. Another two-run double by Schabel pushed the advantage to 7-3 before an error on a Cathryn Zegadlo pop fly allowed Schabel to cross home for the five-run advantage.

Schabel, a native of Iron Ridge, Wisconsin, was 4 for 4 with a career-high four runs batted in, to go along with a run scored.

Svendsen came off the bench to produced two hits, two runs scored, and two RBI.

Coffey had a hit, a run, and a run batted in, while Meverden touched home twice with a hit and a walk.

Etienne tossed five innings and was tagged for three runs, two of which were earned, on two hits and four walks. She struck out five before freshman Sophie Golembiewski (2-0) took over for two perfect innings to secure the win.
