LITTLE RIVER, SO. CAR. - The fourth day of Madison College softball's annual spring trip was the first day with mixed results. The WolfPack rebounded from an 8-1 loss to Lackawanna College to hold off Mohawk Valley Community College in a 5-4 victory.
Game #1: Lackawanna College 8, Madison College 1
The day's first game started well for Madison College, which got a two-out single to center from designated player
Macie Studzinski to score
Shelby Brooks for a 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately, Lackawanna College (7-3) was able to answer right back with six runs in the bottom half of the first inning. The Falcons took advantage of five base hits and two walks against starter
Kelsey Meverden.
The WolfPack left runners in base in the second, third, and fifth innings before Lackawanna added to their lead with two more runs to make it 8-1.
Two more runners would be stranded in the top of the sixth and one more in the seventh.
Brooks, a second baseman from Plover, Wisconsin, was 2 for 4 with a run scored, while freshman
Cassie Coffey also registered a pair of hits.
Macie Studzinski had a hit and a run batted in.
Meverden (0-2) lasted just two-thirds of an inning and was tagged for six earned runs on five hits and two walks. She did record one strikeout before giving way to lefthander
Sophie Golembiewski for the final 5.1 innings. The former Monroe HS athlete allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on four hits and three free passes while striking out one.
The loss marked the first in three all-time meetings with Lackawanna College.
Game #2: Madison College 5, Mohawk Valley Community College 4
Game two of the day featured one really big inning for the WolfPack, who tallied five runs before Mohawk Valley Community College (0-1) could even take a practice swing. A leadoff walk issued to
Cathryn Zegadlo eventually resulted in a run scored on a passed ball to make it 1-0. With runners at the corners, sophomore transfer
Torin Slaughter lined a single to right to plate
Cassie Coffey. An error on the next ball in play allowed both
Kelsey Meverden and Slaughter to score. Shortstop
Aubrey Juga then drove in
Haleigh Benisch with a single to left for the 5-0 advantage.
Madison College was unable to plate any more runs, and managed to hold off the slow comeback effort of the Hawks. Mohawk Valley scored a run in the third, another in the fifth, and one each in the sixth and seventh to close the gap to a single run at 5-4 with sacrifice fly. With the tying run on base, pitcher
Gretta Lewis induced a game-ending ground out to Juga at short.
Benisch, a first year third baseman from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, drove in a career-best two runs and scored another as she was one of six players with a hit for the Pack.
Slaughter had a hit, a run scored, and another driven in, while Coffey and Meverden each had a hit and touched home.
Lewis (2-1) pitched all seven innings and held MVCC to four unearned runs on three hits and five walks. She also struck out a career-high eight batters.
The WolfPack leads the all-time series by a 5-0 count.
