LITTLE RIVER, SO. CAR. - The Madison College softball team played a tripleheader of games Tuesday to wrap up their annual South Carolina Spring Trip, and claimed wins in two of the three games. The WolfPack rolled to a 14-0 run-ruled shutout of Oakton College in its first Region 4 game of the season, and then earned a second straight win in five innings with a 16-3 decision over Onondaga Community College. The day's final game resulted in a 9-2 setback against State Fair Community College. The ten-game trip resulted in a 6-4 record for the Pack.
Game #1: Madison College 14, Oakton College 0 (5 innings)
Madison College jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening half inning as freshman
Sadie Svendsen drove in
Cassie Coffey and
Kelsey Meverden with a two-out, two-run single to right. A double by catcher
Hayden Schabel brought Svendsen home, and second year first baseman
Bertina Dodge delivered a single to left that scored Schabel.
The differential exploded to 9-0 in the third inning on six hits and a walk. Svendsen opened with a single and then scored on yet another double by Schabel. Three batters later, sophomore
Emily Bopes lined a single to left to plate Schabel. Following a pitching change,
Shelby Brooks dropped down a run-scoring bunt single, Bopes scored on a passed ball, and Coffey raced around the bases for an inside the park home run to complete the five-run third.
The final five runs came in the fourth thanks to three hits, two errors, and a walk. With the bases loaded, the Owls committed an error on a ball hit by Dodge, resulting in two runs scoring. A wild pitch plated a third run before a second error on a ground ball by Bopes made it 13-0. A productive ground out by Coffey drove in Bopes for the final tally of the game.
