LITTLE RIVER, SO. CAR. – The second day of the Madison College softball team's annual South Carolina Spring Trip resulted in a pair of one-run losses. The WolfPack fell 2-1 against Henry Ford College before giving up a late two-run advantage in a 10-9 setback to St. Charles Community College.
Game #1: Henry Ford College 2, Madison College 1
Fresh off two wins on the season's first day, Madison College took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second to seize the early momentum. Third baseman
Addalyn Henderson and catcher
Hayden Schabel led off the inning with singles, which were followed by a walk to freshman first baseman
Addie Fritts to load the bases. A fly ball off the bat of designated player
Torin Slaughter resulted in an error by the Hawks right fielder, allowing Henderson to score. Unfortunately, the WolfPack was unable to secure any more runs, leaving a base runner 60 feet from home.
The lead held until the bottom of the third inning, when HFC put two runs on the scoreboard. A two-out single drove in the game-tying run against first year starter
Kelsey Meverden. A successful double steal during the next at bat gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead.
Madison College would strand two runners in the fifth and had the tying run on third after a two-out triple by Slaughter in the sixth, but
Emily Bopes was called out on strikes to end the threat.
Henderson, a native of Rockford, Illinois, was one of four players with a hit in the game, and also tallied the team's lone run. Slaughter, Schabel, and
Raegen Schwarz had the other three base knocks.
Meverden (0-1) took the loss off going three innings and allowing two earned runs on two hits and five walks. The former D.C. Everest HS athlete did strike out three batters before giving way to fellow first year
Sophie Golembiewski for the final three innings. She limited HFC to three hits and a walk, while picking up one K.
Friday's game was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Game #2: St. Charles Community College 10, Madison College 9
Game two of the day saw St. Charles Community College race out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. The Cougars loaded the bases with the first three batters against freshman
Gretta Lewis, and after scoring a run on a double play, re-loaded the bases after back-to-back walks. A bases-clearing double to center made it 4-0, and a grounder through the middle added one more.
The WolfPack got one run back in the second when shortstop
Sadie Svendsen drove a single up the middle to plate Hannah Stremkowski, who had also singled on a ground ball through the right side.
After SCCC regained a five-run advantage in the third with one run, Madison College began its rally to take the lead. Two errors and a single by
Dalana Trumpy plated two runs in the fourth, and in the fifth, the Pack exploded for six runs and a 9-7 advantage. Catcher
Cassie Coffey and reserve
Haleigh Benisch each drove in a run with a single. Later in the inning, Svendsen game to the plate with the bases loaded and ripped a fly ball to right field. Not only did it clear the bases, but Svendsen was able to race all the way around for an inside-the-park grand slam.
Madison College was unable to hang on to the lead as St. Charles took advantage of three walks in the sixth inning to fill the bases. An error by center fielder
Raegen Schwarz on a fly ball allowed all three runners to score, giving the Cougars a 10-9 lead.
Svendsen, a native of Huntley, Illinois, drove in a career-high five runs on two hits. She also scored a run.
Trumpy was 2 for 3 with a walk and scored a career-best two runs, while Meverden posted two hits and a run scored.
Coffey and Benisch each had a hit, scored, a run, and drove in another.
In the circle, Lewis (1-1) suffered her first loss of the season despite seven strikeouts over five innings. The righthander from Holladay, Utah, gave up ten runs, six of which were earned, on nine hits, seven walks, and two hit batters.
Sophie Golembiewski worked a scoreless inning in relief, striking out one batter.
St. Charles has won both meetings in the all-time series.
