GLENDALE, ARIZ. – Day one of Madison College's annual Arizona Spring Trip resulted in a pair of resounding wins to snap a seven-game losing streak against Glendale Community College. The #12-ranked WolfPack earned wins of 10-4 and 17-1 in six innings to sweep the doubleheader. The Gauchos still lead the all-time series 13-5.
Game #1: #12 Madison College 10, Glendale Community College 4
Madison College got on the board quickly in the opening game, posting four runs on four hits and a walk. Catcher
Nate Novinska drove in
Beau Bloxdorf for the game's first run, and sophomore
Quinn Falish lined a single to center to plate Novinska and
Sam Moses. Freshman
Eason Hurd capped the top of the first with a run-scoring single up the middle, bringing home Falish for a 4-0 lead.
Glendale answered back in the home half with three runs on a hit, two errors, a walk, and a balk against starter
Noah Marschke. The Gauchos pulled even in the second with a bases loaded single that plated one run.
The WolfPack went on to score six unanswered runs, starting with left fielder
Braylen White racing home on an error by the GCC shortstop to make it 5-4 in the fourth. An inning later, freshman
Paul Nuetzel grounded a ball through the left side with runners in scoring position to go up by three. A wild pitch later in the frame scored Hurd for an 8-4 differential.
The game's final runs were tallied in the seventh as Nuetzel brought in White with a sacrifice fly, and then Hurd scored on a fly ball single to left by Bloxdorf
Moses, a native of Cedarburg, Wisconsin, was the only WolfPack batter with multiple hits, going 2 for 3 and scoring two runs.
Falish, who split time last season as a pitcher and position player, drove in a career-best two runs and scored two more on a hit and a walk.
Nuetzel led the team with a career-high three RBI as part of a 1 for 2. Hurd took advantage of a hit and two walks to score twice and bring in one more run.
Marschke spent 3.1 innings on the hill and struck out six batters while allowing four runs, two of which were earned, on four hits, five walks, one hit batter, and one balk. Fellow sophomore
Carter Lund (2-0) took over in relief and picked up his second win of the season as he fanned four batters and limited the Gauchos to two hits and one walk over 3.2 scoreless innings.
Game #2: #12 Madison College 17, Glendale Community College 1 (6 innings)
The nightcap remained close until Madison College exploded for back-to-back big innings en route to a run-ruled decision. Freshman
Ian Salvesen doubled to left in the second with two runners in scoring position as
Sam Moses and
Casey Wambach both scored.
Beau Bloxdorf made it 3-0 in the third after leading off with his first triple of the season, and then scoring two batters later on a wild pitch.
Glendale Community College's (20-12) lone run came in the third courtesy of an error, a wild pitch, and a sac fly.
The game turned in Madison College's favor in fifth as they sent 12 batters to the plate and scored eight runs on six hits, two errors, one hit batter, and a wild pitch.
Nate Novinska,
Casey Wambach, Salvesen,
Matt Gruber, and Bloxdorf each had one RBI, while freshman
Chase Maika drove in two runs as the advantage swelled to 11-1.
The game ended in the sixth inning after the WolfPack scored six more runs.
Noah Fitzgerald delivered a two-run double, followed by a Salvesen run-scoring single. Two more runs scored when Gruber singled to center, and then Maika tallied the final run as he scored on a double-play ball off the bat of
Eason Hurd.
On the hill, second year righthander
Noah Musolf (1-0), a Frankline, Wisconsin, native tossed five innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits while striking out three for the win. Freshman
Charlie Slawinski had a strikeout in his one scoreless, hitless inning.
Salvesen led the offense with a career day at the plate, going 3 for 3 with four runs batted in and two runs scored by the native of Hatley, Wisconsin.
Bloxdorf matched him at the dish with three hits in the leadoff spot, which resulted in a pair of runs scored.
Gruber, a first year left fielder from Franksville, Wisconsin, generated three runs batted in and two scored on two hits in the ninth spot in the lineup. Fitzgerald and Maika each had a hit, two runs scored, and two batted in.

Madison College (2-3) squares off with Western Nebraska Community College (8-18) on Friday, March 13 in a single, nine-inning game. The WolfPack is 4-1 all-time against the Cougars.
