WATERLOO, IOWA - Saturday's season-opener for the Madison College women's soccer team saw both clubs net a goal within a minute of each other en route to a 1-1 draw in a match against Hawkeye Community College. Sophomore
Suzy Hinds Cruz, who led the WolfPack in scoring with 14 goals, found the back of the net in the season's first outing. The draw completed the first meeting all-time between the Pack and the RedTails, who opened the season ranked #19 in the
NJCAA Division II Preseason Poll.
Looks at the goal were hard to come by for Madison College, especially in the first half; however, a set play opportunity presented itself as the clock moved into the 34' and the ball was set along the right side line. After freshman
Chloe Voung lofted the ball towards the goal, fellow first year
Emlyn Knutson out jumped the Hawkeye goalkeeper to head the ball towards the far post, where Hinds Cruz was able to tap it in for the 1-0 advantage. Knutson and Voung were each awarded their first career assists.
Exactly one minute later, the Red Tails were on the attack off a set play of their own when a shot on goal ricocheted off the crossbar above the outstretched arms of sophomore goalkeeper
Kaelyn Welch. The rebound was controlled by another RedTails player and her shot beat a sliding save attempt by Welch for the 1-1 equalizer.
Welch remained up the task, recording three saves in the match to keep the draw in tact. The WolfPack offense was unable to produce another shot on goal despite five shots total.
