ENID, OKLA. - Tuesday's
NJCAA Division II Baseball World Series quarterfinal between #1 Pasco-Hernando State College and #5 Madison College was decided in the fourth inning, when the Bobcats posted eight runs en route to a 10-3 decision inside
David Allen Memorial Ballpark. Sophomore
Marcelino Edison Alonso hit the team's first home run of the tournament in an attempt to spark a rally. The loss ended a 13-game win streak for the WolfPack, who are now 6-2 all-time and 1-1 in the world series against PHSC.
Pasco-Hernando State College, which has been ranked the #1 team in the NJCAA Division II Poll since late-March, pushed across a run in the first inning to assume a 1-0 advantage. After starter
Quinn Falish hit the first two batters, a ground out to second baseman
Beau Bloxdorf allowed the run to score.
It remained a one-run game until the top of the fourth, when Madison College pulled even. A throwing error by the Bobcats shortstop on a leadoff ground ball by Alonso ended up in the WolfPack dugout, allowing him to advance to second. First baseman
Tyler Butina followed with a line drive single that snuck past the shortstop and into centerfield, driving in Alonso.
The game turned in the next half inning when PHSC used seven hits, including two home runs, and two walks to tally eight runs.
In an effort to jumpstart a rally, Bloxdorf opened the top of the fifth with a double to deep right center. Three batters later, Alonso sent a two-out, two-run home run over the big wall in straight away center to cut the deficit to six.
Unfortunately, the WolfPack was unable to generate any more runs, leaving two runners on in the sixth and only sending three batters to the plate in each of the final three innings.
Pasco-Hernando (50-10) tacked on another run in the seventh with a leadoff homer against
Landon Dessart to make it 10-3.
Alonso finished 2 for 4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Butina and Bloxdorf each had two hits, with Butina driving in a run and Bloxdorf scoring another. Sophomore
Howie Rickett also registered a pair of hits.
Falish (4-1) took the loss after allowing six runs on three hits and two walks over three innings. He struck out one before
Nick West came in to face four batters and record one out in the fourth inning. He was credited with three runs and three hits. Dessart tossed 3.2 innings with an earned run, three hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.
Ben Kasten fanned one batter in his scoreless inning.
