MADISON, WISC. - Friday's 15-0 shut out of Oakton College in a seven-inning victory via run rule saw the Madison College baseball team combine a red-hot offense with some impressive pitching and defense. A trio of arms limited the Owls to just four hits, while the #13-ranked WolfPack bats put together their seventh game in the last nine outings with double-digit runs and fifth time in that stretch with ten or more hits. The Region 4 win gives the Pack a 21-13 lead in the all-time series.
A scoreless game through two-and-a-half innings turned into a 3-0 lead for Madison College (12-6) with one swing of the bat. Freshman
Nate Novinska drove a three-run home run over the left field fence to bring in
Chris Calico and
Ryan Santi for game's first runs. For Novinska, the long ball is his team-leading four homer, and they have all come over the last four games played. The differential became 4-0 in the fourth when an error following a line drive out by
Ryan Santi allowed
Marcelino Edison Alonso to run from third to home after his initial tag up at second base.Â
The WolfPack really broke the game open in the fifth with five runs against Oakton College (10-7) pitching.
James Duncan singled in
Beau Bloxdorf, and then Alonso followed with a base knock to left that plated
JJ Wolbert. An error on a Calico grounder in the next at bat allowed Duncan to follow
Jalen Gellings across home plate. A sacrifice fly from Santi to score Alonso made it 9-0.
Another big inning in the sixth put the Pack well on their way to a run-ruled decision. Madison College generated six runs on four hits and three walks.
Sam Moses, Alonso,
Brady Henry, and
Trace Kirchberg each picked up an RBI, while Santi tallied two.
While the offense was doing its thing, so were the Madison College pitchers, led by freshman
Axel Donaldson (1-0). The De Pere, Wisconsin, native, earned his first collegiate victory with five innings of shutout baseball with three hits and three strikeouts. Fellow first years
Miles Burchardt and
Ben Ketelsen each tossed an inning in relief and to maintain the scoreless effort. Burchardt struck out one and gave up a hit, while Ketelsen was credited with a pair of K's.
At the plate, Gellings led the hit parade with a 3 for 4 day that resulted in two runs scored. Alonso finished 2 for 3 with a team-high three runs scored, to go along with two runs batted in.
Santi and Novinska tied for team-high honors with three RBI. Both had a runs scored, with Santi producing two hits and Novinska one. Duncan and Henry each had a hit, scored a run, and drove in another, while Wolbert and Bloxdorf each tallied one hit and two runs. Calico racked up two runs driven in and a run scored with one hit.
