MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College softball team picked up a sweep of Kishwaukee College in its penultimate Region 4 doubleheader of the 2025 regular season on Friday at
Robert D. Goodman Softball Field. The WolfPack overcame an early four-run deficit in the opener to win 7-5, and then held off the Kougars in the finale for a 9-5 victory that saw freshman pitcher Lauren Etienne pick up her first career win. Sophomore hurler
Kendall Weik pitched in both contests and moved within one strikeout of tying the all-time Madison College record. The Pack now boasts a 26-15 record in the all-time series, including 21 straight wins.
Game #1: Madison College 7, Kishwaukee College 5
Kishwaukee College opened the game with a leadoff triple and five straight singles against starter
Brooke Steinhorst. With the score at 3-0 and the bases loaded with no outs, coach
Leo Kalinowski made the quick move to switch first baseman
Kendall Weik with Steinhorst. Weik allowed one more run to score on a single, but was able to strike out the side to end the inning.
The WolfPack bats responded with three runs in the home half to make it a one-run game at 4-3. Freshman Raegen Schwartz single in
Ava Stahl, and four batters later, fellow first year
Hayden Schabel drove in Schwarz with a grounder through the right side.
Tailer Bartelt, a sophomore from Evansville, Wisconsin, followed with a ground ball single of her own back up the middle to score Steinhorst.
Stahl tied the game in the second inning with a sprint around the bases to lead off the inning. She drove a double to right that was misplayed, allowing her to continue advancing. It remained even at 4-4 until the bottom of the fourth when Madison College registered two more runs. Schwarz followed a leadoff walk to
Rylee Rogers with a double to right to give the home team the lead. Two batters later,
Brooke Anderson grounded out to second and Schwarz was able to cross home to make it 6-4.
The Kougars narrowed the differential to one with a RBI-double in the top of the sixth; however, the WolfPack got the run right back in the home half after Rogers opened the frame with a triple to left and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Schwarz.
Schwarz, an Appleton, Wisconsin, native who leads the team in batting average, hits, and runs batted in, went 2 for 3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Stahl finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored, and Rogers was 1 for 2 with two walks and a pair of runs scored. Schabel, a native of Iron Ridge, Wisconsin, had two hits and a run batted in, while Anderson and Bartelt each had a hit and a RBI.
In the circle, Steinhorst was credited with four earned runs on six hits without recording an out. Weik (10-7) earned the win in relief to reach double-digit pitching wins for the second straight season. Despite giving up a run on five hits and four walks, her 12 strikeouts moved Weik within two K's of tying the school's all-time record for strikeouts with 243.
Game #2: Madison College 9, Kishwaukee College 5
Game two again saw both teams put up crooked numbers in the first inning, starting with a two-run top of the first for Kishwaukee College (33-21). The Kougars' third batter smashed a two-run homer off first year started
Lauryn Etienne. Madison College (24-13) came right back with four runs in the bottom half to take the lead. After
Raegen Schwarz drove in a run with a ground out and
Brooke Steinhorst doubled to left to plate
Rylee Rogers,
Kendall Weik hit her second career home run and first since March 25. The two-run shot made it 4-2.
The Kougars used their feet, and a Madison College miscue to pull within one in the third. After a successful steal of second, the Kishwaukee College runner attempted another steal of third, and the attempt to throw her out was offline from Rogers at catcher. The error allowed the run to score.
In the fourth, the home team plated three runs on five singles. Schwarz picked up two more runs batted in with a bases loaded base hit to left that scored
Jeneya Marquez Perez and
Ava Stahl. A sac fly from Anderson allowed Rogers to race home for the 7-3 edge.
Following another Kishwaukee College run in the sixth, Madison College pushed their lead to 9-4 with two more runs in the bottom half. Schwarz capped her extremely productive day with a run-scoring double, and then scored on an Anderson single.
The Kougars did add another run off Weik in the seventh. The sophomore righthander tossed two innings in relief to earn her first career save, and surrendered two runs, one of which was earned, on two hits and four walks. She also picked up career strikeout number 244. The win went to Etienne (1-0) as the Oregon, Wisconsin, native was tagged for three runs, two earned, six hits, one walk and a career-high seven strikeouts over five innings.
Steinhorst led the WolfPack hit parade with a 3 for 4 effort that yielded a run and a run batted in. Schwarz was 2 for 4 with a run and a four RBI as the freshman now boasts three games with four or more runs driven in.
Stahl, a native of Wautoma, Wisconsin, had two hits and three runs scored, while Rogers posted two hits and two runs. Anderson had a hit and two runs batted in, and Weik finished with a hit, two RBI, and a run scored.
