NEW K QUEEN: Weik sets career strikeout record in Sophomore Day sweep

Two run-ruled victories complete regular season, give WolfPack momentum into Region 4 postseason

MADISON, WISC. - Sophomore pitcher Kendall Weik became Madison College's all-time leader in strikeouts as part of the Madison College softball team's sweep of Saturday's Region 4 doubleheader against Joliet Junior College at Robert D. Goodman Softball Field. Weik tied and broke the record in the second inning of a 9-0 win in five innings of the opener, and the WolfPack rolled to a 12-1 decision in five innings in the finale. Madison College recognized an eight-member Sophomore Class of 2025 between games, and the group included Tailer Bartelt, Rylee Rogers, Kendall Weik, Ava Stahl, Brooke Anderson, Brooke Steinhorst, Maya Dzick, and Jenna Johnson.

Game #1: Madison College 9, Joliet Junior College 0 (5 innings)

Weik's moment came in the top of the second inning as she struck out the side. The Fifield, Wisconsin, native tied Casey Fountain's ('22) record of 245 career strikeouts with the leadoff batter, and then took over the top spot with a called strike three to the inning's second batter. Weik, who improved to 11-7 with the win and now sits one win away from tying Fountain for second on the career wins list, scattered two hits and a walk in her five innings, and finished with eight strikeouts to reach 252 for her career.

Madison College jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Raegen Schwarz got things going with a two-run home run to center for her second of the season. After a Brooke Steinhorst single, Brooke Anderson doubled to the wall in center to make it a three-run advantage.

A six-run bottom of the second broke the game wide open as the WolfPack racked up five hits and two walks. A base on balls and two singles loaded the bases for Rylee Rogers, who drove in a run with a sac fly to center. The bases were packed again after another Schwarz hit, and Steinhorst brought home Maya Dzick with a single to left. After going up 6-0 on a fielder's choice from Anderson, Weik drew a walk to once again load the bases for Tailer Bartelt. The second year from Evansville, came through with a three-run double to make it 9-0.

Stahl went 3 for 3 with two runs scored for her sixth three-hit game of the season. Schwarz finished with two hits, two runs, and two runs batted in. Steinhorst also posted a multi-hit game with two hit that yielded a RBI and a run scored.

Bartelt led the Pack with three runs batted in. Anderson added two RBI and a run scored with a hit.

Game #2: Madison College 12, Joliet Junior College 1 (5 innings)

Joliet Junior College (22-24) scored their lone run of the game in the opening half inning of the regular season's final game. A lead off walk was followed by a steal of second, and when the runner advanced on a passed ball, a throw to third by catcher Hayden Schabel went wide and the run scored.

Madison College (26-13) answered back with two runs in the bottom half. Rylee Rogers sprinted around the base paths for an inside-the-park home run to tie the game at 1-1. After hits by Raegen Schwarz and Brooke Steinhorst, Brooke Anderson came through with a run-scoring single to plate Schwarz for a one-run lead.

Much like the opener, the WolfPack broke the game wide open in the second, scoring nine runs. Ava Stahl and Schwarz each drove in a run before Steinhorst clubbed her first home run of her career, a three-run homer to left to make it 7-4. Weik and Cora Nelson eventually added run-scoring singles before Stahl capped the inning with a two-run base knock to right to make it 11-1.

The game's final run came in the third, courtesy of a sac fly from Anderson that brought Schwarz in to score.

Schwarz, an Appleton, Wisconsin, native, went 3 for 3 with three runs scored and a run batted in. The freshman finished the regular season going 9 for 13 with ten RBI and eight runs scored in the final four games.

Rogers ended the game with two hits, two runs, and a RBI, while Steinhorst used her two hits to drive in three runs and score another.

Stahl matched Steinhorst with three runs driven in with her 1 for 2 effort. Nelson scored twice with a hit and a RBI, and Anderson tallied two runs batted and a runs scored with one hit.

Steinhorst (11-6) worked three innings and held the Wolves to a one run two hits and two walks for the win. The Poynette, Wisconsin, fanned two before freshman Lauryn Etienne entered for two innings of relief work and held JJC scoreless with one walk and four K's.
