Sweep of rival Milwaukee Tech sends #4 WolfPack to 14 straight wins

Alonso racks up six hits, while Marschke sets down 11

OAK CREEK, WISC. - The Madison College baseball team has won 14 consecutive games after earning a road sweep of a Region 4 doubleheader at in-state rival Milwaukee Area Technical College on Tuesday. The WolfPack followed a resounding 17-0 shutout win in six innings with a 9-4 victory in the nightcap. Sophomore Marcelino Edison Alonso finished the day with six hits, while first year pitcher Noah Marschke recorded his third straight outing with double-digit strikeouts to help secure the team's 18th 30-win season over the past 21 years. The two decisions improve the Pack's all-time series lead over the Stormer to 102-16.

Game #1: #4 Madison College 17, Milwaukee Area Technical College 0 (6 innings)

The offense got going in the second inning for Madison College when sophomore third baseman Charlie Schau singled on a line drive to left to drive in freshman Tyler Butina from second base for 1-0 lead. They added three more runs in the third. Butina came up with the bases loaded after three consecutive singles, and pounded a hard ground ball to right field to bring in Jalen Gellings and Nate Novinska. After a walk re-loaded the bases, Schau picked up another run batted in with a fielder's choice to second that plated Marcelino Edison Alonso to make it 4-0.

Alonso and Howie Rickett each came through with a run-scoring single in the fourth as the lead grew to six runs, and Gellings picked up a RBI in the fifth with a line drive to left that saw Chris Calico cross home for a 7-0 advantage.

The game turned into a rout in the sixth when the WolfPack put together their highest-scoring inning of the season with ten runs on eight hits, two walks, two hit batters, and an error. Three straight singles to start the frame filled the bases, and two runs came in when Schau made it four straight base hits. A wild pitch scored Rickett for a 10-0 lead before James Duncan, JJ Wolbert, and Novinska earned RBI's with either a single or a run forced in. Brady Henry delivered a two-run double to right for a 16-0 lead, and Beau Bloxdorf capped the high-scoring opener with a run-producing ground out.

Butina was 3 for 4 with a career-high four runs batted in and two runs scored. The transfer from Central Michigan University now boasts four games this season with three hits.

Alonso and Gellings also both had 3 for 4 performances, with each scoring two runs and driving in another. For Alonso, the Reedsburg, Wisconsin, native, owns seven games with three or more hits, while Gellings, a former Campbellsport HS athlete, has three such games and is riding his second eight-game hitting streak of the year.

Schau tallied two hits, a season-high three runs batted in, and a run scored, while Rickett posted two hits, one run, and a RBI. Novinska led the team with three runs scored, to go along with a run batted in and one hit.

Not to be overshadowed, freshman pitcher and transfer from Michigan State University Quinn Falish (4-0) remained perfect on the season with five strong innings of scoreless baseball. The De Pere, Wisconsin, native, scattered four hits and struck out three batters. Through 27.0 innings, Falish has posted a 0.67 earned run average. Sam Moses came in to work the final inning and allowed one hit.

Game #1: #4 Madison College 17, Milwaukee Area Technical College 0 (6 innings)

In the finale, Madison College built up a 7-0 lead before Milwaukee Area Technical College (25-19) was finally able to score their first runs of the day. Scoreless through two innings, Marcelino Edison Alonso continued his hot hitting with a double to right that scored Jalen Gellings to go up 1-0.

The WolfPack exploded for five more runs in the fourth, taking advantage of four hits and three walks. After Ryan Santi led off with a double, Chris Calico singled him in for a two-run lead. A fielder's choice bunt by Gellings was enough to score Calico before Alonso singled to right to drive in Beau Bloxdorf. A bases loaded walk of Howie Rickett forced in a run and Charlie Schau earned a RBI with a ground out to third as the differential reached six.

Alonso, who fell a triple shy of hitting for the cycle back on March 27 at Triton College, picked up the pursuit again when he recorded an run-scoring triple in the fifth to leave himself a home run away.

The Stormers put two runs on the scoreboard in the sixth against new pitcher Sam Steuber, who took over for starter Noah Marschke

In the seventh, Alonso came up again and drew a walk. A wild pitch moved him and Gellings into scoring position for Butina, whose ground ball led to an error and scored two runs for a 9-2 lead. MATC-Milwaukee tacked on a couple of late runs in the seventh.

Of the team's nine hits, Alonso delivered three of them, drove in three runs, and score two more. For the day, he was 6 for 8 with two extra base hits, one walk, four runs scored, and four runs batted in.

Gellings was tops on the team with three runs, while also driving in a run as part of a 1 for 3 effort with a walk. Calico had a hit, a run, and a RBI, while Novinska, Santi, and Bloxdorf each had a hit and a run.

Marschke (4-0) struck out 11 batters in five scoreless innings, while also allowed a pair of hits and two walks. The native of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, boasts 35 K's over his last 19 innings pitched, and now leads the team with 57 strikeouts on the year.

Steuber was credited with all four runs allowed on five hits in his 1.1 innings, and Chase Baker closed out the win by recording the final two outs. Each finished with one strikeout.
