SUGAR GROVE, ILL. - A trio of Madison College pitchers limited the Waubonsee Community College bats just long enough to give the offense time to find some life Sunday, resulting in a late 5-1 road win in Region 4 competition. Freshmen
Ben Ketelsen,
Chase Baker, and
Mason Sherman surrendered just four total hits and one unearned run before the WolfPack bats broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning with four runs to secure the team's sixth consecutive victory. The decision gives the Pack a 19-11 lead in the head-to-head series.
Madison College had runners in scoring position in the game's first half inning; however, the visitors were unable to capitalize. That left the door open for the Chiefs to take an early lead, which they did in the bottom of the second. A hit by pitch of the leadoff batter followed by two errors by Ketelsen allowed WCC to go up 1-0.
It remained a one-run differential until the top of the seventh. With pinch runner
JJ Wolbert on second with two outs, freshman
Jack Bauer hit a hard ground ball back up the middle and Wolbert was able to score and tie the game at 1-1.
An inning later, the WolfPack put together another two-out rally to take a late, comfortable lead. Back-to-back walks with two outs loaded the bases, Wolbert hit a line drive to left to score
Marcelino Edison Alonso. An error by the left fielder also allowed
Tyler Butina to score for a 3-1 lead. Sophomore
Chris Calico then followed with a single through the right side that drove in
Nate Novinska. A throwing error on the relay by the second baseman brought home Wolbert to make it a four-run advantage.
Baker and Sherman combined to keep the Chiefs off the scoreboard for the final two innings. Ketelsen worked the first two innings and gave up the unearned run and a hit, while recording one strikeout. Baker (3-1) earned the win with six strong frames of scoreless ball. The native of Mukwonago, Wisconsin, scattered two hits and two walks, and also fanned two batters before Sherman worked the ninth.
Wolbert led the team with two runs scored. Calico and Bauer each finished with a hit and a run batted in, while Novinska and Alonso both had a hit and scored a run.
