MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College baseball team picked up its third sweep of a Region 4 doubleheader on Friday, securing wins of 10-0 in five innings and 6-5 against Carl Sandburg College at
Robin Roberts Field. Freshman
Axel Donaldson tossed a one-hitter in the run-ruled opener after taking a no-hit bid into the fifth inning, while sophomore slugger
Marcelino Edison Alonso belted two home runs on the day. The two victories increase the #8-ranked WolfPack's lead in the all-time series with the Chargers to 26-5, with wins in 14 of the last 15 meetings.
Game #1: #8 Madison College 10, Carl Sandburg College 0 (5 innings)
Righthander
Axel Donaldson made his third start of the season, and after issuing a walk to the second batter he faced, the first year hurler went on to retire 11 consecutive batters. Held without a hit for the first four innings, Carl Sandburg College finally busted through with a leadoff single in the top of the fifth; however, Donaldson (2-1) followed with three consecutive strikeouts to end the inning. He would finish the game with a career-best nine strikeouts in the shutout win.
The WolfPack offense had also given Donaldson some early breathing room with a three-run first inning, aided by the Sandburg starting pitching. Three consecutive walks loaded the bases and an error by the catcher plated
Howie Rickett for the game's first run. Following the innings fourth walk to
James Duncan to re-load the bases, freshman
Nate Novinska was hit by a pitch to force in
Marcelino Edison Alonso to make it 2-0. The fifth and final bases on balls of the fram was issued to sophomore
Trace Kirchberg, pushing
Tyler Butina across home plate.
In the third inning, Madison College had a runner on base and one out for Novinska, the team's home run leader. The freshman from Verona, Wisconsin, added to his total with a two-run blast to left for his sixth home in 2025, which gave the Pack a 5-0 edge. An inning later, the home team put up a four-run inning to bust the game wide open. After a wild pitch allowed
Jack Bauer to score, Rickett singled up the middle and Alonso cranked a two-run home run to left for his fourth of the season. The score reached 9-0 when Novinska's ground ball to third resulted in a throwing error and allowed
Charlie Schau to score.Â
In the bottom of the fifth,
Jalen Gellings reached on a single to left, and was joined on the base paths with consecutive walks to Rickett and Alonso. Another grounder to third, this time by Butina, again resulted in an error and the game ended via run rule as Gellings touched home.Â
Madison College finished with seven hits and nine walks. Schau, playing in his second game since returning from an injury suffered during the Arizona trip in March, was the lone player with multiple hits as the Park Ridge, Illinois, native was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.Â
Novinska drove in a team-leading three runs with a hit and a run scored, while Alonso tallied a hit, two walks, two runs scored, and two more batted in. Rickett also scored twice and was 1 for 2 with two walks.
Game #1: #8 Madison College 6, Carl Sandburg College 5
In the day's finale, Carl Sandburg College (9-18) scored first with two-out double to center that scored a run in the second inning. The lead didn't last long as Madison College (19-7) responded with a five-run bottom half. A walk and a
Sam Moses double set up
Brady Henry to drive in the first run, which he did on a productive ground out to second. A sacrifice bunt by
JJ Wolbert two batters later made it 2-1 with Moses touching home. And
Marcelino Edison Alonso made it 5-1 with a three-run homer to left for his second of the day and fifth of the year.Â
The Chargers got a run back in the third with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. They made it 5-3 in the fifth with a RBI-single to right. In the bottom of the fifth, a pair of walks to
Ryan Santi and Moses put runners on, and
Jack Bauer's ground ball to shortstop was enough to get pinch runner
Nate Novinska in to score to make it 6-3. That run proved to be the game-winner as a walk, a hit by pitch, and a wild pitch in the top of the sixth put runners in scoring position with the tying run at the plate. A double to right scored both for a 6-5 score, which it remained thanks to a strikeout and a fly out.Â
Sandburg threatened again in the seventh after a leadoff double and an error put the tying and winning runs on base. That's as far as they would make it with
Broden Jackson fanning two batters and inducing a pop out in foul territory to get the win.
Sophomore
Nick West (1-2) earned his first win of the season, and first since the 2023Â Region 4 Tournament after missing all of last season due to injury. The former Verona Area HS athlete went four innings and allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on four hits. He struck out four before
Carter Lund took after in relieve for an inning. Jackson earned his second save of the year, holding CSC to two runs on two hits and a walk over two innings, while also striking out four batters.
The WolfPack, who were out-hit 8-4, were led by Alonso with a hit, three runs batted in, and a run scored.
Beau Bloxdorf, Santi, and Moses each had a hit and scored a run, while Bauer tallied a run scored and one driven in despite going 0 for 3.
