#17 WolfPack explodes for 19 runs, 20 hits in resounding win to close out Arizona trip

Quartet of arms allows just three hits, trio of bats produces three or more hits each

PHOENIX, ARIZ. - The Madison College baseball team ended their annual Arizona Spring Trip on a very high note, rolling to a 19-0 win in seven innings over Phoenix College. The #17-ranked WolfPack recorded season-highs with 19 runs and 20 hits, while also earning their first shutout with a combined three-hitter. The win gives the Pack a 5-1 record all-time over the Bears, and closes the 2025 trip to the desert with a 7-5 mark.

Playing as the home team, Madison College produced two runs in the bottom of the first with a two-out rally. Marcelino Edison Alonso started his career day with a single, and after a wild pitch and a walk, scored on a Quinn Falish liner up the middle. Howie Rickett did the same in the next at bat to drive in Ryan Santi and make it 2-0. In the third, sophomore Jalen Gellings' sacrifice fly brought in a run as Chris Calico crossed home for a three-run advantage.

The game began to break open in the third with three runs on three hits and a walk. With the bases loaded and one away, Calico grounded a double down the left field line, scoring Falish and Nate Novinska. Jack Bauer's ground out to third scored Trace Kirchberg.

A six-run fourth put the contest in Madison College's control. Novinska and Landon Dessart each had a RBI, and Calico drove in two more with a double to right. Dessart and Calico then both scored on separate wild pitches to make it 12-0.

The runs and hits kept coming in the fifth as the score reached 19-0. The seven runs came courtesy of seven hits and three walks. Santi, Dessart, Calico, and Beau Bloxdorf all had run-scoring singles, and all four eventually scored a run. Tyler Butina picked up a RBI with a sac fly, and Brady Henry and Santi capped the scoring with bases-loaded walks.

While the offense was rolling, so was the WolfPack pitching staff as it locked down the Phoenix College (13-19) bats. Sophomore starter Carson Klaus worked three innings, allowed one hit, and struck out three batters. Freshman Broden Jackson (2-0) took over for 1.2 innings and earned the win, his second of the season. Jackson fanned two batters before Braycen Burg and Landon Dessart each pitched an inning or more with a hit and a K.

Calico, a second year outfielder from West Salem, Wisconsin, racked up a career-high in hits, runs batted in, and runs scored. He was a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate with five RBI and three runs. Calico's three doubles tie a program record and make him the fifth player in school history to accomplish the feat.

Alonso and Falish each had three hits, setting a new career-best for the latter. Alonso scored three runs , and Falish had two runs and a run batted in. JJ Wolbert, Santi, and Novinska all produced two hits. Santi's base knocks and team-high three walks yielded three runs and two more batted in. Dessart finished with a hit, a walk, two runs, and two RBI.
