MESA & PHOENIX, ARIZ. - In an effort to maximize the amount of game they can get played while in the desert, the Madison College baseball team played a unique doubleheader on Sunday that included a pair of nine-innings games at two different locations. The #13-ranked WolfPack opened with a 7-3 victory over Mesa Community College, and then dropped a 7-1 contest at #5 South Mountain Community College.
Game #1: #13 Madison College 7, Mesa Community College 3
It took Madison College just three batters to get a run on the scoreboard.
Beau Bloxdorf got things going with a one-out single and then advanced on a wild pitch.
Ryan Santi then delivered a single through the right side to score Bloxdorf.
Still a one-run game in the fourth, freshman
Sam Moses delivered a ground out to second base that allowed pinch runner
Chris Calico to race in from third and score for a 2-0 lead.
The WolfPack burst the game open with a four-run top of the fifth. An error, single, and walk loaded the bases with no outs, and
Marcelino Edison Alonso brought home
JJ Wolbert and Bloxdorf with a line drive single to left. Two batters later,
James Duncan sent a two-run single up the middle to plate Santi and Alonso to make it 6-0.
Moses, a native of Cedarburg, Wisconsin, delivered the final blow to lead off the top of the sixth when he blasted his first collegiate home run with a solo shot to deep left.
The Thunderbirds (21-12) were held scoreless until the final half inning when they registered a three-run homer before first year arm
Miles Burchardt secured the final two outs.
The fourth double-digit hit total for Madison College in its first seven games reached a dozen base knocks. Alonso tallied two hits, two runs batted in, and a run scored. Duncan also had two hits and two RBI. Bloxdorf added two hits and a team-leading two runs scored, while Wolbert went for two hits and crossed home once.
Moses finished with two runs driven in, a run scored, and one hit. And Santi went 1 for 3 with a run and a RBI.
Starter
Quinn Falish (1-0) earned his first collegiate win after the De Pere, Wisconsin, native tossed 6.1 innings of shutout baseball with one hit and three walks allowed. He struck out three before giving way to Ben Ketelson for an inning and Burchardt for the final 1.2 innings.
Game #2: #5 South Mountain Community College 7, #13 Madison College 1
The second meeting of the spring trip against the Cougars saw SMCC jump out to a four-run lead. A leadoff triple and a ground out produced the first run in the bottom of the first against starter
Braycen Burg. Three more runs were added in the third on two hits, one hit batter, and a wild pitch.
Madison College got one run back in the top of the fourth.
Marcelino Edison Alonso drove a two-out triple to right field, and was able to continue running around the bases on an error.
The three-run deficit returned to four a half-inning later when a wild pitch allowed South Mountain Community College (22-11) to go up 5-1. They made it 6-1 in the fifth with a solo home run by the first batter faced by new pitcher
Carson Klaus. A sacrifice fly in the sixth brought the score to 7-1.
The WolfPack was limited to just three hits by
Beau Bloxdorf, Alonso, and
Chris Calico.
Burg (0-1), a native of Rubicon, Wisconsin, was tagged for five runs on four hits and a walk over four innings. He struck out three before handing over the reins to Klaus for 2.2 innings. The second year arm surrendered two runs on four hits and a pair of walks. Freshman
Landon Dessart pitched the final 1.1 innings and recorded two K's and one walk.

Madison College (5-3) returns from an off day on Monday to play a single, nine-inning game at Central Arizona College (18-10). The Vaqueros own a 6-1 lead in the all-time series.
