Two-hitter and comeback win equal successful first day for WolfPack

Weik shuts out PSU DuBois in run-rule decision, Madison College erases three-run deficit against PSU Schuylkill

LITTLE RIVER, SO. CAR. - The first day of the 2025 Madison College softball season finished with a pair of wins that came about in two very different ways. The WolfPack started the season with a 9-0 win in five innings over PSU DuBois thanks to a two-hitter from sophomore pitcher Kendall Weik, and then followed it up with a dramatic 4-3 decision to beat PSU Schuylkill after trailing by three in the first inning. The victories came in the first-ever meetings between the Pack and both Lions programs.

Game #1: Madison College 9, PSU DuBois 0 (5 innings)

The WolfPack got to work right away as Weik worked a 1-2-3 top of the first against PSU DuBois (2-3-1) and the bats generated two runs on two hits, a walk, and an error in the bottom half. Sophomore Ava Stahl led off with a line drive single to right, and then scored on an error after stealing second to make it 1-0. Three batters later, Brooke Anderson, a second year utility player, doubled to left to plate Rylee Rogers, who had drawn a walk.

In the second inning, sophomore third baseman Maya Dzick drove a double to left, stole third, and then scored as Stahl came through with her second hit of the game for a 3-0 advantage.

Madison College broke the game wide open in the third inning, putting up four runs on three hits and three walks. A leadoff double from sophomore Brooke Steinhorst was followed by a walk to Anderson to put two runners on. After freshman Macie Studzinski popped out, Weik helped her own cause with a two-run double to right. Raegen Schwarz, a first year outfielder, promptly followed with a grounder up the middle that allowed Weik to touch home for a six-run advantage. After two more walks to Dzick and Shelby Brooks loaded the bases, Stahl produced another RBI with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Schwarz.

The score differential reached 9-0 in the fourth when Schwarz stepped to the plate with two on and two out, and ripped a double over the center fielder to drive in pinch runner Kaley Koltz and Weik.

Weik (1-0) worked another three-up, three-down inning in the fifth to close out the run-rule and earn her first win of the season. The righthander from Fifield, Wisconsin, scattered two hits over her five innings and fanned five batters.

At the plate, Stahl, a native of Wautoma, Wisconsin, was 2 for 2 with two runs batted in and a run scored. Weik completed her impressive opening game with two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored. Schwarz, an Appleton, Wisconsin, native, finished her collegiate debut with two hits, one run scored, and a team-leading three runs driven in. Anderson also scored a run and drove in another as part of a 1 for 2 day.

Game #2: Madison College 4, PSU Schuylkill 3

Roughly seven hours later, Madison College returned to the diamond for the day's second game, which saw PSU Schuylkill (2-3) strike first in the opening half inning against starter Brooke Steinhorst. A walk and a double to the first two batters put the Lions up 1-0, and two singles followed to score another run. A third single drove in one more run to put the WolfPack in a 3-0 hole.

In the fourth, Madison College broke through to tally two runs. With two on and one away, freshman Hayden Schabel used her first collegiate base hit to drive in two runs with a single to center. Raegen Schwarz and pinch runner Kaley Koltz both crossed home to pull the Pack within a run.

Still trailing in the bottom of the sixth, the WolfPack loaded the bases on a single, a hit by pitch, and an error. Pinch hitter Kendall Weik stepped in and delivered a fly ball single to plate Steinhorst. After the next two batters recorded outs with the bases loaded, Ryler Rogers hit a light pop fly right in front of home plate that the catcher dropped, allowing sophomore Tailer Bartelt to score the go-ahead run.

Steinhorst (1-0) gave up a single to the top of the seventh; however, a ground out to second and a line drive double play from second baseman Tristen Young and shorstop Brooke Anderson ended the game. Steinhorst finished with three earned runs on seven hits and two walks. The former Poynette HS athlete struck out three batters over seven innings to notch her first win this season.

The WolfPack produced just four hits in the game, led by Schabel. The native of Iron Ridge, Wisconsin, was 1 for 2 with a pair of runs batted in. Weik came through with a hit and a RBI, while Schwarz and Steinhorst each scored a run on one hit.
