WolfPack takes down Central Lakes, Delaware Tech to remain unbeaten

Bats rack up a season-high dozen hits, Weik fans ten in finale

LITTLE RIVER, SO. CAROLINA - The Madison College softball team made it four straight wins to start the season on Friday after defeating Central Lakes College by a 6-4 final in the day's first game, followed by a 9-4 victory over Delaware Technical Community College in the finale. The WolfPack (4-0) had never played the Raiders before Friday's meeting, and then set a season-high of 12 hits in their second all-time win in as many seasons over the Roadrunners, who had won seven consecutive games to start the season prior to playing Pack.

Game #1: Madison College 6, Central Lakes College 4

Central Lakes College (6-4) got on the scoreboard first, taking advantage of an early WolfPack error on the leadoff batter and then a single up the middle. Madison College answered right back in the top of the second as the Raiders returned the favor with an error of their own to put a runner aboard with one away. Tristen Young then stole second ahead of a two-out double to left by fellow freshman Bertina Dodge for her first career hit and run batted in.

An inning later, the Pack posted three more runs to take a 4-1 lead. Ava Stahl drew a leadoff walk and stole second, putting her in position to score when freshman Reagen Schwarz lined a single to left. After Brooke Steinhorst was hit by a pitch, Macie Studzinski doubled on a long fly ball to right to plate Schwarz and Steinhorst.

The three-run advantage did not hold, however, as CLC pushed across three more runs to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth. The runs came courtesy of two hits, two errors, and a walk.

In the top of the seventh, Stahl started the frame with another walk and steal of second, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Two more walks loaded the bases with nobody out and sophomore Brooke Steinhorst drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to center. The WolfPack added an insurance run as a hard grounder off the bat of Studzinski made it through the left side and allowed pinch runner Rylee Rogers to score for a 6-4 lead. Freshman Jeneya Marquez Perez finished off the win with by stranding the tying run on first base.

Studzinski paced the offensive attack with career-highs of two hits and three runs batted in by the Waupaca, Wisconsin, native. Schwarz, a former Appleton West HS athlete, went 2 for 3 with a run scored and one batted in. Stahl, a sophomore, was tops with two runs scored.

Madison College finished the game with seven stolen bases.

In the circle, Steinhorst worked the first five innings and allowed three unearned runs on five hits and five walks. She struck out four before Marquez Perez (1-0) took over for the final two innings to secure her first collegiate victory. The native of Madison, Wisconsin, gave up an unearned run on three hits.

Game #2: Madison College 9, Delaware Technical Community College 4

Both teams put up crooked numbers in the opening inning as Madison College led 3-2 through one. Sophomore Brooke Anderson singled in Shelby Brooks and Rylee Rogers to make it an early two-run lead before Brooke Steinhorst doubled to right to plate Anderson for a 3-0 advantage. Delaware Technical College (7-1) got to started Kendall Weik for a pair of runs on two hits and an error before Weik struck out the side.

The WolfPack bats kept right on going with another three runs in the second and third innings. With the bases loaded and two out in the second inning, Anderson and Steinhorst came through with back-to-back clutch singles. Anderson's line drive brought in Hayden Schabel and Bailey Mester, before Steinhorst plated Brooks. An inning later, Brooks did the heavy lifting with a liner to left that scored Tailer Bartelt, and Raegen Schwarz single back up the middle to allow Mester and Brooks to touch home for a 9-2 advantage.

Delaware Tech did put up two more runs in the fifth against Weik; however, the righthander improved to 2-0 seven innings of work and a season-best ten strike-outs. She was tagged for four runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits, one walk, and two hit batters.

Five different players tallied two hits in the contest, with Anderson's two base knocks leading to four runs driven in to match her career-best from last season. She also scored a run. Schwarz and Steinhorst both registered two hits and two RBI. Rogers and Schabel each finished with a pair of hits and a run scored. Brooks, a native of Plover, Wisconsin, scored three of the team's runs, to go along with a run batted in on a 1 for 1 day with two walks.
