GLEN ELLYN, ILL. - The Madison College women's basketball team will carry some momentum into the postseason after Thursday's 45-41 win over Region 4 foe College of DuPage closes the regular season with back-to-back victories. Freshman
Hannah Solie knocked down five 3-pointers for the second time this season en route to matching her career high in points, while the WolfPack defense held the Chaparrals to less than ten points in each of the last three quarters to help erase double-digit deficit. The win avenges a home loss to the Chaps just five days prior and gives the Pack a 29-19 lead in the all-time series.
The game's first ten minutes told a completely different story than the next 30 minutes as the College of DuPage (15-13) stormed out to an 8-1 lead, and then used a six-point scoring run to build their first double-digit lead at 14-4. After the WolfPack trimmed the deficit to five, COD closed the quarter with a layup and a late three-pointer to make it 21-11.
The game's second quarter was an offensive struggle for both teams as they combined to score a dozen points on 3 of 22 shooting that including a 1 for 12 effort from beyond the arc. After
Keelyn Zwirschitz scored on the opening possession, Madison College did not score again until a pair of free throws from Solie with 5:51 to go in the half. The Chaps tallied the final five points of the half and owned a 29-15 advantage at the break.
The game turned in the second half as the WolfPack continued to stymie the home team's offense, while working their way back in front. DuPage took a 32-17 lead four minutes into the third quarter when Madison College saw Solie drain three consecutive triples sandwiched between a pair of
Dani Latz buckets for a 13-0 surge to get within two. The Chaps scored once more to take a 34-30 differential into the final ten minutes.
The Chaparrals added a layup in the fourth quarter for a six-point edge before
Amaya Travis scored to kick start a 7-0 surge to give the WolfPack a 37-36 lead. After trading leads, the game was tied at 40-40 with two minutes remaining when Latz converted three of four free throws before Zwirschitz put the game out of reach with two successful hits from the charity stripe in the final seconds.
Solie, a Chetek, Wisconsin, native, racked up 19 points for the third time this season as she made her five 3's and went 6 for 16 from the floor with two free throws.
Zwirschitz also scored in double-figures with ten points as the former Antigo HS athlete made 3 of 13 shots and 4 of 7 from the charity stripe. She added seven rebounds, three steals, two assists, and a block.
Latz nearly recorded a double-double, finishing with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds, as well as one blocked shot.
Maia Ellis racked up 12 boards, three points, and a team-leading seven assists.
The WolfPack shot 32% (15-47) from the floor, 21% (5-23) from long distance, and 52% (10-19) at the line. Madison College owned a 9-3 lead in fast break points, while the Chaparrals led 14-6 in points off turnovers and 14-10 in points in the paint.
