CLUTCH CHLOE: Late goal sends WolfPack past Waubonsee, onto Region 4 Quarterfinals

Freshman drills game-winner in 87', Welch posts eight clean sheet of the season

MADISON, WISC. - Thursday's Region 4 Division II Women's Soccer Tournament Play-in match between #9-seeded Waubonsee Community College and #8-seeded Madison College finished in dramatic fashion as freshman Chloe Voung netted the game-winner with minutes left to play for a 1-0 victory at Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. Sophomore goalkeeper Kaelyn Welch recorded her 13th career shutout to move into second place in program history.

With the score tied and time winding down in regulation, Madison College started to put more pressure on the WCC defense. Between the 54th and 60th minutes, Alyssa Moore had a shot ricochet off the crossbar, Suzy Hinds Cruz had a shot blocked, and Voung saw an open look at the net closed down by a quick reacting defender with a block inside the goalie area. Another attempt from Voung in the 76' sailed wide and Reese Brekke became the second player to miss off the crossbar in the 78'.

Following a corner kick in the 86', the ball was deflected out of bounds and the WolfPack earned a throw-in. Waubonsee Community College (5-5-3) failed to clear and freshman Madelyn Marquette came up with possession. The WolfPack worked the ball to the left side before returning it to Marquette, just beyond the top of the penalty area. The Janesville, Wisconsin, native, played a pass back to an open Voung, and the midfielder from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, unloaded a strike from 35 yards out that flew perfectly between the goalkeepers hands and the crossbar.

The goal by Voung is her third of the season and second in the last three matches. Marquette earned her second assist this fall.

Madison College racked up a 15-3 edge in total shots, but just a 6-2 differential in shots on goal. The WolfPack also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Voung led all players with five total shots and three shots on goal. Hinds Cruz posted four shots with one on goal and Lexi Huebner added two shots on goal.

Welch, a native of Monroe, Wisconsin, picked up two saves en route to her eighth shutout of the season, which also ties for the second most in program history.

The second 1-0 win this season over the Chiefs gives the WolfPack a 5-0 mark in the all-time series.
