MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College men's soccer team found themselves in yet another tough Region 4 match on Saturday, and managed to come away with a 3-0 shutout win over Prairie State College at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. Both teams struggled to find scoring opportunities; however, the #14-ranked WolfPack received goals from
Cole Rogers,
JJ Espinosa, and
Mason Leslie, while
Caylen Coventry recorded his fourth clean sheet. The victory is the Pack's first in three all-time meetings against the Pioneers.
Madison College attempted a header in the 5' that sailed wide right, and it would be another 30 minutes until either team was in position to generate another shot. Rogers, a sophomore from Auckland, New Zealand took full advantage when first year
Justyn Blair headed a
Dan Fox pass towards the front of the net. Rogers was all alone and redirected the pass with his right foot into the goal for a 1-0 lead in the 34'. It's Rogers' team-leading eighth goal of the year.
That lead held through the first half and the first ten minutes of the second half until the WolfPack created some separation from Prairie State College (7-6-2). Late in the 56', Madison earned a corner kick that was sent in by Fox. The ball flew over the goalie box and was collected by freshman
Gio Diaz, who promptly played it back to the front of the net where Espinosa made a diving header inside the right post for his third goal this season.
As the match moved into its 68', the Pack had a throw-in from the left sideline that was played by freshman
Josh Kiltz, who dribbled through the Pioneers defense to where the penalty box meets the baseline. There he left-footed a pass to the center that was deflected by PSC in the direction of Leslie. The first year midfielder from Huntley, Illinois, reacted swiftly and booted a shot past the 'keeper for a three-goal advantage. It was the first collegiate goal for Leslie.
The match finished with Madison College owning a 7-4 differential in total shots, including a 4-2 lead in shots on goal. Rogers was tops for the Pack with two shots on goal.
Coventry, a freshman from Barcelona, Spain, was credited with one save in the shutout win.
