PALATINE, ILL. - The Madison College women's basketball team led from start to finish Wednesday night as they earned their second consecutive Region 4 victory with a 72-62 road decision at Harper College. The freshmen duo of
Keelyn Zwirschitz and
Aubrey Maass led the way 21 and 20 points, respectively, as both established new career-high scoring marks. The win gives the WolfPack a 20-3 record all-time against the Hawks.
Maass got things going early with a successful three-point try in the game's first ten seconds. More than three minutes later,
Hannah Solie drained another long range hit to start a 14-5 run the rest of the first quarter. Harper College (1-13) made an attempt to trim the deficit in the second half, putting together a 7-2 push after a Maass layup made it 25-13. However, with the differential at seven, the WolfPack answered with seven consecutive points and maintained a 39-28 edge at halftime.
In the second half, the Hawks strung together three straight baskets to make it a 44-36 game with less than six minutes to play in the third quarter. First year guard
Jaia Carson ended the run with her only three of the night to push the lead back into double-digits for good. The WolfPack owned a 57-42 advantage through three quarters, and saw the lead swell to as big as 19 after four straight points from forward
Dani Latz made it 68-49 with 6:10 remaining. Harper College netted the game's final nine points before the buzzer sounded on a WolfPack win.
Zwirschitz, a 5'11" guard from Antigo, Wisconsin, registered her third consecutive - and sixth overall - double-digit scoring game with 21 points on 8 of 15 shooting and a 5 for 7 effort at the free throw line. She dominated the second quarter with ten points on 5 of 7 shooting, and also finished the game with six rebounds, one assist, and one steal.
Maass was 9 of 17 from the floor and 2 for 5 beyond the arc en route to her 20 points. The guard from Montello, Wisconsin, also picked up six boards, four steals, and two assists to go along with her third consecutive game and seventh overall with ten or more points.
Solie posted eight of her 11 points in the opening quarter to help the WolfPack take control of the game early. The former Chetek-Weyerhaeuser HS athlete recorded her second consecutive game in double-figures as she went 4 for 9 with a pair of three pointers and a free throw. Solie is 7 for her last 15 from distance, and also led the team with a career-high seven assists.
Rounding out the double-digit scoring was freshman
Dani Latz with her tenth double-double as she notched ten points and pulled in a game-best 15 rebounds. The native of Bloomer, Wisconsin, also came up with a team-high five steals.
Madison College shot 43% (28-64) overall, 27% (5-18) from three-point territory, and 73% (11-15) at the charity stripe. They also held a 19-11 lead in points off turnovers, a 13-4 edge in second chance points, and a 32-24 differential in points in the paint.
