Madison College comes up empty in long-awaited season opener

WolfPack controlled most of the match, produced sizable advantage in shots

PALOS HILLS, ILL. - After waiting an extra week to play their official season opener after the original was yanked out from under them, the Madison College women's soccer team accomplished just about everything they set to do Saturday, except come away with a win. The WolfPack controlled the ball for much of the match and produced a huge edge in shots on goal; however, the host Cyclones were the only team to put the ball in the net en route to a 2-0 decision in Region 4 play. The all-time series is even at 1-1-1 through three meetings.

Madison College racked up 20 total shots and put 11 on goal throughout the match, compared to four shots on goal for MVCC. Cyclones goalkeeper Ximena Delgado was up to the challenge and made all 11 saves to earn the clean sheet.

After the WolfPack missed on three of their shots, Moraine Valley (2-0) was awarded a penalty kick in the 24' and converted past starting goalkeeper Ava Foster. The rest of the first half saw the Pack post six more shots with two on goal before going to halftime down 1-0.

Madison College went right back to work peppering the MVCC keeper with shots to start the second half. Early in the 54', the Cyclones took a two-goal lead thanks to a costly turnover by the WolfPack on the home team's offensive half. A left-footed shot from the penalty arc sailed over the arms of freshman Kaelyn Welch, who took over in goal at the half. Welch got a finger tip on the ball as it just snuck inside the upper right corner.

Foster, a native of Holmen, Wisconsin, and Welch, a Monroe, Wisconsin, native, each finished with one save and one goal allowed.

First year midfielder Grace Brown, a former Janesville Craig HS athlete, led the WolfPack with seven total shots, while midfielder Jerzey Ladwig, a transfer from NCAA Division II UW-Parkside, posted a team-leading five shots on goal.
