Game #1: #11 Madison College 2, Oakton College 1
Offense was hard to come by in the day's first game. The WolfPack got on the scoreboard first with a run in the bottom of the first inning.
Charlie Marion's hard ground ball to right field allowed
Jalen Gellings, who had stolen second base after reaching on a fielder's choice, to score for the game's first run.
Oakton College answered in the next half inning, making the home team pay for an error with a successful sacrifice fly to even the score at 1-1.
It remained that way into the fifth, where the Owls found themselves with a chance to take their first lead as the bases were loaded and no outs. Reliever
Ryan Karst struck out the next batter, and then induced a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play. The juice from that play helped fuel a run in the bottom half.
Dayton Rozinski-Hicks reached on an error by the third baseman, then proceeded to steal second base and advance to third on a wild pitch.
Nick Nowak fielder's choice ground ball looked like the Owls were going to get Rozinski-Hicks at home; however, an errant throw allowed him to score for a 2-1 edge.
Oakton would leave two runners on in the sixth and one in the seventh as Karst closed the door on his first career save.
Starter
Liam Stumpf (4-3) earned the win with four solid innings that resulted in one unearned run on a hit and a walk. He struck out three before Karst took over for the final three innings, and limited the Owls to two hits and three walks with two K's.
At the plate, Nowak and Marion each had a hit and a run batted in, while
Grant Ross produced the team's only other hit as the WolfPack was limited to fewer than four hits for the fourth time this season.
Game #1: #11 Madison College 14, Oakton College 6
The finale was a completely different story, with the team combining for 20 runs and 16 hits. Madison College took full advantage of 15 walks and two hit batters, especially in the first inning as they racked up five runs. The Oakton College (18-30) starter loaded the bases on three walks, and then forced in two runs by walking
Marcelino Alonso and hitting
Chris Calico. Freshman
Kobe Vosberg came through with a two-run single to center, and fellow first year
Sam Steuber drove in a run of his own with a ground ball single to left.
The lead grew to 7-0 in the third when
Charlie Schau followed a
Jake Petasek walk and Howie Ricket double with a two-bagger of his own to right to score both runners. The Owls answered in the fourth with three runs on two hits and two errors. Madison College had a chance to respond with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom half, but were unable to convert after a fielder's choice resulted in an out at home.
Oakton also loaded the bases in the top of the fifth with no outs, but the threat was limited when Alonso caught a fly ball in right center and threw a laser home to cut down a potential run to complete a double play. One pitch later, the Owls belted a three-run home run to get within 7-6.Â
The game turned in the bottom of the fifth with the Pack using two hits, five walks, one hit batter, and two errors to bring in seven more runs and create some separation with a 14-6 advantage.
James Duncan hit a fielder's choice that resulted in an error and a run scoring. With the bases loaded, Calico lined a double to center to bring all three runs in to make it 11-6. After a wild pitch scored a run, Petasek lofted a sacrifice fly to center to score Vosberg, and the scoring ended after Rozinski-Hicks drew a walk to force in Steuber.
Calico, a native of West Salem, Wisconsin, drove in a career-high four runs and also scored two more as part of a 1 for 3 game with a walk. Rickett, a Waunakee, Wisconsin, product, produced a career-best three runs scored as he went 1 for 3 with a pair of walks. Alonso was the lone player with multiple hits for the WolfPack, going 2 for 3 with two walks to generate two runs scored and on driven in.
Evan Iwinski got the start and worked three innings without allowing a run. The righty from Franklin, Wisconsin held the visiting bats to one hit and struck out a career-high five batters.
Camden Broske (2-1) took over, and despite giving up six runs, three of which were earned, on five hits and one strikeout, he picked up the win.
Noah Musolf pitched the final 2.1 innings without surrendering a run on two hits. He did fan four.
