ENID, OKLA. - Madison College had an early opportunity to bust open Tuesday's
NJCAA Division II Baseball World Series quarterfinal at
David Allen Memorial Ballpark, but were only able to generate two runs and eventually lost a 7-2 contest to #2-seed Brunswick Community College. The #6-seeded WolfPack were limited to just seven hits, while the Dolphins, ranked #4 in the final
NJCAA Division II Poll, tallied 14 base knocks to advance to the national semifinals.
Some clutch two-out hitting in the opening half inning got Madison College off to a fast start.
Jalen Gellings reached on a single to left, and after
Charlie Marion popped out in foul territory for the second out of the inning, Gellings advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored when
Charlie Schau's grounder up the middle got through the infield. The Pack loaded the bases with a hit by pitch of
Payton Frehner and a single off the bat of
Will Johannes, which brough
Jake Petasek to the plate. Petasek drew a walk to force in a run as Schau stepped on home to make it 2-0. The bases were still packed when catcher
Howie Rickett was called out on strikes to end the threat and leave three runners stranded.
Brunswick Community College (50-8) immediately rallied to take the lead for good with a four-run bottom of the first. Three singles in the first four batters against starter
Liam Stumpf made it 2-1, and a three-run home run with two outs gave the Dolphins a 4-2 advantage.
Madison did put runners on base in the second thanks to a hit batter and a walk; however, another inning-ending strikeout left two aboard. Brunswick then put together a two-out rally of their own in the bottom half, rattling off three consecutive two-out singles to extend their lead to 5-2.
The game's final runs were posted in the bottom of the fourth, as BCC again strung together three base hits in a row to make it 6-2. A sacrifice fly on the first pitch from reliever
Noah Musolf drove in another run for a 7-2 differential.
In the meantime, the Dolphins pitching staff retired 13 consecutive Madison College batters following a leadoff single by
Dayton Rozinski-Hicks in the fourth to a one-out base knock from Frehner in the eighth. The WolfPack did seem to be starting a late rally in the ninth inning with singles by
Grant Ross and Rozinski-Hicks; however, a 4-6-3 double play ball hit by
Nick Nowak ended the game.
Stumpf (4-5) took the loss after giving up seven runs on 11 hits in his 3.1 innings. The former Mineral Point HS athlete did strike out two. Musolf, a native of Franklin, Wisconsin, worked the final 4.2 innings and scattered three hits and a walk, while fanning one.
Rozinski-Hicks led the offensive production with two hits, while Schau posted a hit, one run scored, and one run batted in. Petasek was 1 for 2 with a pair of walks and a RBI, and Gellings had a hit and a run scored.
