MADISON, WISC. - Friday's rainy Region 4 softball doubleheader proved to be the regular season finale for Madison College after the rest of the scheduled weekend was washed out. The WolfPack swept visiting Black Hawk College by scores of 3-1 and 17-13 at
Robert D. Goodman Softball Field to pick up a pair of significant region victories ahead of tournament play beginning next weekend. The two decisions improve the Pack's lead in the all-time series to 14-2.
Game #1: Madison College 3, Black Hawk College 1
Freshman
Kendall Weik finished off an impressive first year in the circle with a two-hitter to improve to 12-4 on the season. The Fifield, Wisconsin, native, allowed one earned run and struck out six in a pitcher's duel that saw Weik retire the first nine batters she faced and carry a no-hitter into the seventh inning.
The WolfPack went ahead 1-0 in the first after freshman
Abbey Remington led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Ava Stahl, and then scored on a sac fly by
Mackenna Schultz. The one-run advantage doubled in the third when Stahl lifted a 2-1 pitch into shallow right field, allowing
Madison Coubal to tag up and score on another sac fly.
Madison College added another insurance run in the sixth when freshman
Brooke Anderson followed back-to-back singles by sophomores
Mackenna Schultz and
Jenna Redders with a double to the wall in center that scored Schultz.
Three outs away from a no-hitter, Weik allowed her first base hit to the leadoff hitter in the top of the seventh. After a double put runners on second and third, the Braves brought in a run with a sacrifice fly. The game's tying run came to the plate with the next to batters, whom Weik retired via a strikeout and a line out to Remington in center to end the game.
Six different players registered a hit for the WolfPack, with Schultz finishing the game with a hit, a run scored, and a run batted in. Remington and Coubal each posted a hit and a run scored, while Anderson came in with a base hit and a run driven in.
Game #2: Madison College 17, Black Hawk College 13
The day's second game had a much different feel as the teams combined for 30 runs and 27 hits while playing through rain and wind. The WolfPack jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning after
Mackenna Schultz drove in
Abbey Remington, and pitcher
Brooke Steinhorst helped her own cause with a two-run double to right.
Following a brief rain delay in the top of the second, Black Hawk College (25-21) came back with a four-run inning that included a costly two-run error and a two-run home run. The WolfPack responded with six runs in the home half on four hits, two walks, and an error. The runs all came with two outs on the board, starting
Ava Stahl scoring on an error to tie the game at 4-4.
Jenna Redders then singled in
Mackenna Schultz to give the Pack the lead. Steinhorst picked up another RBI with a ground ball through the left side that drove in Redders, and an error on
Karis Paulson's grounder to shorstop pushed the advantage to 7-4.
Madison Coubal finished off the big frame with a line drive double to right, plating Steinhorst and Paulson to put the home team ahead by five.
The lead was short-lived as the Braves scored seven runs to take an 11-7 lead in the top of the third. The rally began with a leadoff home run, and then saw Madison College pitchers walk five of the next seven batters before BHC came through with consecutive two-out hits.
The back-and-forth continued in the bottom of the third. Three straight singles pulled the WolfPack within 11-8 as Schultz drove in a arun, and then back-to-back doubles by Redders and
Brooke Anderson tied the game at 11-11. Then with two outs, the Pack got run-scoring singles from Paulson and Remington. With the bases loaded, Stahl sent a line drive to deep center that resulted in a three-run triple and a 16-11 edge.
The bats cooled off after that, with Madison College scoring another run in the fifth and Black Hawk College adding two more in the seventh.
The WolfPack, who racked up their second most runs and hits in a game this season, finished with seven of their nine batters earning multiple hits and the lineups top four hitters each with three hits. Stahl, a freshman from Wautoma, Wisconsin, was 3 for 5 with a team-high four runs batted in and two runs scored.
Remington and Schultz both matched season-bests with three hits and three runs scored. Schultz added two RBI and Remington had one. Redders' three hits were good for three runs driven in and two runs scored.
Anderson, Steinhorst, and Paulson all had two hits in the game, with Anderson matching Remington and Schultz with three runs scored. Steinhorst matched a career-best with three runs batted in.
Steinhorst, a native of Poynette, Wisconsin, worked two innings and allowed nine runs, five of which were earned, on three hits and four walks. She struck out two batters. Sophomore
Ella Wyskochil (4-2) took over in the third, and despite giving up four runs on five hits and walking seven, she earned the win. The righthander from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, did strike out six batters before
Hannah Aldrich was brought in to record the final out of the game.
