WolfPack rally from extra innings loss to shutout Triton

Weik joins ten-win club as win snaps three-game losing skid for Madison College

MADISON, WISC. - Friday's Region 4 softball doubleheader at Robert D. Goodman Softball Field saw Madison College suffer a heartbreaking loss in extra innings, and rebound for a run-ruled shortened victory in the finale. The Trojans overcame a late WolfPack rally to win the first game by a 4-3 final in nine innings, and freshman Kendall Weik threw a one-hit shutout as part of an 8-0 victory that featured a five-run sixth inning to end the game. Madison College leads the all-time series by a 28-17 tally.

Game #1: Triton College 4, Madison College 3 (9 innings)

The visiting Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the opening half inning when a leadoff walk was followed by a two ground outs and a two-out single to left. Triton College left the bases loaded in the second, and two more runners on base in the third. Madison College pulled even in the fourth thanks to Brooke Anderson's single up the middle brought in Mackenna Schultz

The Trojans again had the bases loaded in the fifth, however, starter Brooke Steinhorst induced an inning-ending fielder's choice. With the game still even at 1-1 after seven, the game moved to extras.

Triton College took a 2-1 lead when they opened the eighth with back-to-back singles. Then with two outs, the visitors used a hit and a walk to fill the base paths ahead of a second straight base on balls to force in the second run.

With their backs against the wall, the WolfPack scratched out two more runs in the bottom half to keep the game moving forward. An error and a Schultz sacrifice bunt allowed Abbey Remington to sprint in from third, and with two outs, Anderson came through with a clutch line drive to center to plate Ava Stahl for even the score at 3-3.

Playing under International Tie Breaker Rules, a passed ball put the go-ahead run on third for the Trojans to start the ninth. A bunt single brought the run in for a 4-3 advantage. Madison College did load the bases in the bottom half with the extra runner, a walk, and a single, but Stahl fly ball to right was tracked down for the game's final out.

Anderson finished with two hits and two runs batted in, while Remington used her two hits to score one run. The WolfPack's other hit came from Schultz, who also scored a run.

Steinhorst went 7.2 innings and limited the Trojans to two runs despite allowing nine hits and giving up ten walks. She struck out four batters before Ella Wyskochil (2-2) took over in relief for the final inning-plus. The sophomore allowed the eventual game-winning run and took the loss despite a pair of strikeouts.

Game #2: Madison College 8, Triton College 0 (6 innings)

Game two was another closely played affair until a big sixth inning put the W away for Madison College (22-9). A Triton College (21-9) error on a sacrifice bunt from Ava Stahl allowed the speedy Abbey Remington to race around the bases and score from first for the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning.

It remained a one-run differential until the bottom of the fifth when a two-out triple by Stahl drove in Tailer Bartelt. Then an error by the first baseman on a ground ball hit by Mackenna Schultz allowed Stahl to cross home for a 3-0 lead.

Three hits and three errors in the bottom of the sixth ended the game early via run-rule, as they combined to score five more runs. Karis Paulson's triple to left brought in pinch runner Brooke Anderson and Madison Coubal. A passed ball allowed Paulson to touch home for a 6-0 lead, and Stahl grounder through the left side scored Remington. The game's final run came on the sixth error committed by the Trojans, with Stahl scoring from second on a miscue by the shortstop.

Stahl, a native of Wautoma, Wisconsin, went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in to lead the offense. Paulson also added two hits, two RBI, and a run scored. Remington finished with two runs scored on a hit and a walk.

Freshman Kendall Weik (10-3) tossed a one-hit shutout and struck out nine batters for the fifth time this season en route to earning her tenth win of the season. The Fifield, Wisconsin, native, is the 11th player in program history to win ten games in a single season.
