MADISON, WISC. - Two of the hottest bats in the Madison College baseball lineup exploded in Saturday's doubleheader sweep over Harper College at
Robin Roberts Field. The WolfPack steamrolled the Hawks by a 15-1 final in five innings to take the opener, and followed with a 9-0 blanking in the finale to run their current win streak to nine games. Freshman
Charlie Schau and sophomore
Charlie Marion both went 4 for 4 in the first game, with Schau becoming the fifth player in program history to produce seven runs batted in in a single game, a list that Marion joined on March 29. The victories give Madison a 27-5 edge in the head-to-head series and nine consecutive wins over the Hawks.
Game #1: #17 Madison College 15, Harper College 1 (5 innings)
The assembly line of hits, runs batted in, and runs scored started immediately for the two Charlies. With two outs on the board in the bottom of the first, Marion pounded a 1-1 offering over the right field wall for a 1-0 lead and his team-leading seventh home run of the season. Two batters later, Schau followed a
Payton Frehner walk and steal with a line drive to right to make it 2-0.
Madison College came through with another two-out rally in the second to put up four runs on three hits, three free passes to first, and one error.
Nick Nowak roped a run-scoring triple to left, Marion looped a RBI-single over third, and Schau drove in a pair with single to left to make it 6-0.
After Harper College took advantage of an error and a fielder's choice to score their only run in the top of the third, the WolfPack went right back to work with six runs in the home half. A throwing error on a caught pop fly allowed
Jake Petasek to score after he led off with a single. Sophomore center fielder
Dayton Rozinski-Hicks ripped a double to left to bring in
Howie Rickett, and two batters later it was Frehner driving in Rozinski-Hicks on a single through the right side. Schau, whose older brother Hank played for the WolfPack from 2016 to 2017 and now serves as the pitching coach for Harper College, stepped to the plate with two runners on and bashed his second home run of the season to make it 12-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, Marion racked up his fourth hit to plate Nowak, which was followed by a single to left by Frehner to score Rozinski-Hicks. Schau then completed the game's scoring, and his record-tying performance, with a two-bagger to center that allowed Marion to touch home.
Schau, a native of Park Ridge, Illinois, finished 4 for 4 at the plate with seven runs batted in and a run scored to establish new career-highs in hits and RBI. Marion, who posted his seven runs driven in against Sauk Valley Community College, was also 4 for 4 against the Hawks as he was against the Skyhawks. The Franklin, Wisconsin, product, scored a career-best four runs and drove in three more.
Frehner posted two hits, a walk, two runs scored, and two runs batted in. Rozinski-Hicks tallied three runs scored, one hit, and one RBI, while Nowak had two runs, one run batted in, and one hit.
Meanwhile, second year arm
Eamonn Mulhern (1-0) went about his business on the hill with five innings of two-hit baseball, allowing one unearned run and two walks. He fanned two batters for his first win of the season and second of his career.
Game #2: #17 Madison College 9, Harper College 0
Madison College relied on two big innings and some terrific pitching to earn the lopsided shutout win in game two. Following two scoreless innings, the WolfPack broke through in the third for five runs on six hits and a walk.
Jalen Gellings and
Howie Rickett opened the inning with singles, and Gellings scored on a productive ground out by freshman
Chris Calico. Two batters later,
Grant Ross grounded a ball back up the middle to bring Rickett home, and
Charlie Marion followed with a single over the shortstop to score
Dayton Rozinski-Hicks.
Will Johannes completed the inning with a two-run line drive single to center.
Harper College (8-24) had their best chance to score in the top of the fifth with the bases loaded and one out, but were unable to take advantage. Instead, the WolfPack put up four more runs to secure a 9-0 lead. The inning featured three walks, three hit batters, three wild pitches, one passed ball, and one single from Gellings.
Charlie Schau and Gellings both scored on wild pitches, and the other two runs were forced in on a walk to Rozinski-Hicks and HBP of Rickett.
Pitchers
Camden Broske (1-0) and
Ryan Karst combined for a one-hit shutout. Broske, a former West Best West HS athlete, earned his first career W with five innings of scoreless ball and allowed one hit and three walks. He struck out two before giving way to Karst to make his season debut after battling back from injury. The Elm Grove, Wisconsin, native and transfer from University of Illinois-Chicago did not surrender a hit in his two innings, and finished with a walk and two K's.
Gellings, a native of Eden, Wisconsin, was tops on the team with two hits and two runs scored. Rozinski-Hicks, Ross, Marion, and Johannes all finished with one hit, one run scored, and one run batted in.
