OCONOMOWOC, WISC. - The Madison College baseball team opened a home-and-home series against in-state and Region 4 rival Bryant & Stratton College on Tuesday with a 15-7 victory at Wisconsin Brewing Company Field. Five players had multiple hits in the game, led by a career-high effort from sophomore Peyton Frehner, as the WolfPack never trailed in the nine-inning game. Winners of five straight on the season, Madison College is now 10-3 all-time against the Bobcats ahead of the series finale in Madison on Wednesday.
Following a scoreless first two innings that saw Bryant & Stratton College leave the bases loaded in the second, the WolfPack, who moved up to #17 in the
NJCAA Divsion II Poll earlier in the week, plated four runs on five hits and a walk. With two runners on and one out, sophomore
Will Johannes delivered a run-scoring single to right, and Frehner followed with a line drive to left to drive in another run as he kickstarted his productive afternoon. Three batter later it was freshman
Marcelino Alonso with a clutch two-out, two-run single up the middle that scored Johannes and Frehner for a 4-0 lead.
The Bobcats posted their first two runs in the fourth using a RBI-triple and a sacrifice fly. Madison College answered in the top of the fifth with four more runs. A single and two free passes loaded the bases for sophomore
Jake Petasek, and Bryant & Stratton College went to the bullpen to bring in Petasek's brother, Alex. Alex threw five pitches to his brother and issued a walk to force in Frehner. A BSC error on a
Nick Nowak grounder allowed two more runs to cross before freshman
Charlie Schau's ground out to third brought in Petasek for an 8-2 advantage.
Frehner, a product of Waukesha, Wisconsin, came through again in the top of the sixth, ripping a line drive to center for a double that scored Johannes. The seven-run lead dipped to just three runs in the bottom half as the Bobcats took advantage of four hits, three of which went for extra bases, and a walk to put up a four-run inning of their own.
However, the WolfPack bats didn't quit and came through with a three-run inning in the seventh. Petasek opened with a two-bagger and scored on a Schau single up the middle.
Charlie Marion produced a double and followed Schau across home plate when freshman
James Duncan put a line drive into right field.
The final BSC run came in the seventh with a bases loaded sac fly, and the Pack completed their scoring in the ninth with three final runs. Johannes followed a Marion lead-off triple with a sac fly to right, and then Frehner capped his career day with a solo home run to right for his second long ball of the season. A run-scoring double by Alonso to plate
Chris Calico made it 15-7.
Frehner produced his first four-hit game as he was 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He drove in three runs and scored three more to lead the offensive charge.Â
Marion posted three hits and also scored three runs, while Alonso, an outfielder from Reedsburg, Wisconsin, matched Frehner with three RBI on two hits. Schau and Petasek each had two hits, with the former scoring two runs and batting in two more while the latter had two runs scored and a RBI. Johannes' day yielded two runs and two runs batted in with one hit.
On the hill, starter
Grant Ross (1-1) earned his first win of the season and struck out a career-best eight batters. The righthander from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, held the Bobcats to two runs on three hits and three walks over his five innings.
Eamonn Mulhern and
Sam Steuber each pitched a pair of innings in relief. Mulhern gave up five runs, eight hits, and a walk, to go along with three K's. Steuber held BSC scoreless on a hit and a strikeout.
