MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Freshman pitcher
Kendall Weik started the Madison College softball team's annual spring break trip with a record-setting performance in the circle, and set the tone for a day that ended with three wins on Friday. Weik's 15 strikeouts keyed a 6-1 victory over Lackawanna College (PA), which the WolfPack followed with a pair of five-inning, run-ruled victories by a 10-0 final over Ancilla College (MI) and an 8-0 tally against USC Sumter. The wins push the Pack's current win streak to five straight games.
Game #1: Madison College 6, Lackawanna College 1
Madison College handed their first year starter a 1-0 lead in the opening half inning with run-scoring single by
Brooke Anderson to plate
Ava Stahl.
Kendall Weik took over from there, following up a leadoff walk with three consecutive strikeouts. The Falcons (7-5) did manage to even the score at 1-1 in the second inning on a walk, error, and fielder's choice through the first three batters, and again Wek responded by striking out the side.
A productive ground out from
Mackenna Schultz drove in freshman
Abbey Remington in the third inning to give the WolfPack a 2-1 advantage. That differential remained until Madison College put up four runs in the top of the seventh on four hits and an error. Remington and Stahl each reached with singles, and Remington eventually crossed home on an error by the catcher during a double steal. Two batters later, sophomore
Jenna Redders doubled to left, scoring Stahl, and fellow second year
Karis Paulson followed with a two-run single to right to drive in Schultz and Redders.
Weik, meanwhile, continued to deal and recorded one strikeout in the third, two in the fourth, and three in the fifth. Her first of back-to-back K's in the sixth tied the previous program record of 13 strikeouts in a game, which had been accomplished on three separate occasions since 2013, and the second whiff broke the record. The righthander from Fifield, Wisconsin, added one more in the final inning to finish with 15. Weik (2-1) finished the game with one unearned run allowed on two hits and six walks.
The WolfPack offense was led by Stahl after the second baseman from Wautoma, Wisconsin, went 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored. Remington, a first year centerfielder out of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, registered a hit, a walk, and two runs scored. Sophomores Schultz and Redders each had a run scored and one batted in, while Paulson, an outfielder from Monroe, Wisconsin, paced the Pack with two RBI as part of a 1 for 4 game.
The game marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Game #2: Madison College 10, Ancilla College 0 (5 innings)
The WolfPack continued their momentum right into the game's second day, and jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Ancilla College (0-4) did their part to help, issuing walks to the first six batters to step to the plate and handing Madison College a 3-0 edge. Freshman
Maya Dzick then singled to right with the bases loaded for her first collegiate hit and runs batted in, driving in
Brooke Anderson and
Madison Coubal.
The advantage grew to six runs in the second inning on back-to-back base hits from Coubal and
Tailer Bartelt, and a two-run line drive to center off the bat of
Ava Stahl made it 8-0 as
Jenna Johnson and
Brooke Cimler touched home. Dzick added to her productive afternoon with another hit and RBI in the fourth inning, which also included a Stahl run-scoring single up the middle to cap the scoring.
Dzick, a native of Hales Corners, Wisconsin, was 2 for 3 with three runs batted in to establish career-best numbers in those categories. Stahl matched those numbers with two hits and three RBI, while also scoring a run. Coubal, a former Muskego HS athlete, led the Pack with three runs scored as she went 1 for 2 with a walk and a run batted in.
Sophomore
Hannah Aldrich (1-0) picked up her first win of the season with a five-inning shutout that saw the righthander allow just two hits. The native of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, struck out three and issued four free passes.
The win gives Madison College a 3-2 lead in the all-time series with the Chargers.
Game #3: Madison College 8, USC Sumter 0 (5 innings)
A forecasted day of rain on Saturday led Madison College and event organizers to add a third game to the team's schedule, setting up an evening contest win an in-state team, USC Sumter (4-13). Following a scoreless top of the first for the Fire Ants, the WolfPack loaded the bases in the home half on an error and two walks. Freshman pitcher
Brooke Steinhorst gave herself a 1-0 lead with a run-scoring ground out.
A walk and an error in the third put the Pack ahead 2-0, and Madison College put the game away in the fourth with six runs on a hit, a walk, and four errors. The first three errors pushed the differential to 3-0 before a fielder's choice off the bat of Steinhorst scored
Hannah Aldrich for a three-run lead.
Mackenna Schultz singled to left to drive in
Jenna Redders and
Brooke Anderson, and the inning's fourth error allowed the last two runs to score to set up the run-ruled decision.
Madison College scored its eight runs on one hit and six walks, with Schultz providing the only base knock to finish with two RBI and a run scored. Steinhorst also had two runners batted in and a run scored, while freshman
Rylee Rogers led the team by crossing home twice.
Steinhorst (3-0) remained perfect on the young season and registered her first career shutout after limiting USC Sumter to three hits over five innings.
The WolfPack is now 1-0 all-time against the Fire Ants.
