WolfPack takes down #20 Potomac State, extends win streak

Pitchers leading the charge as Madison College picks up consecutive wins number six, seven

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Returning to a two-day hiatus, the Madison College softball team picked up two more wins on Monday to remain perfect on their South Carolina Spring Trip, while also extending their overall win streak to seven straight. The WolfPack opened the day with a 7-3 victory over #20-ranked WVU Potomac State, and followed it up with a 4-1 decision against Region 4 foe Prairie State College.

Game #1: Madison College 7, #20 WVU Potomac State College 3

Madison College had to work their back from an early 2-0 deficit after WVU Potomac State College (7-3) tallied a pair of runs in the first inning against freshman starter Kendall Weik. The Catamounts used a pair of singles to generate their first run, and then took a two-run lead with a run-producing ground out to Jenna Redders at shortstop.

The WolfPack got on the board in the top of the third after singles by Karis Paulson, Brooke Cimler, and Rylee Rogers loaded the bases. Sophomore Mackenna Schultz lofted a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Paulson. An inning later they loaded the bases again, only this time it was thanks to walks issued to Brooke Steinhorst, Paulson, and Ava Stahl. Freshman outfielder Rylee Rogers than delivered a two-out line drive through the right side to score pinch runner Lillie Pluer and Paulson for a 3-2 advantage.

The Catamounts answered with a run on two hits in the fourth inning to tie the score at 3-3, but it was all WolfPack from that point on. Redders drove a triple to the centerfield wall in the fifth, and gave Madison College a 4-3 edge when she touched home on a Steinhorst sac fly to left. A leadoff walk of Cimler in the sixth paid off with a run on a wild pitch, and a two-run double off Paulson's bat in the seventh plated Redders and Steinhorst to cap the scoring.

Weik (4-0) finished off WVUPSC with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to remain unbeaten on the season. The righthander struck out eight batters in her first outing since breaking the school for K's in a game with 15 on Friday. The former Phillips HS athlete allowed three earned runs on eight hits and a walk over her seven innings.

Three players led the offensive effort with two hits. Paulson, a native of Monroe, Wisconsin, was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in, while Redders' two hits led to two runs scored and Rogers' two base knocks help drive in two runs.

The game marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Game #2: Madison College 4, Prairie State College 1

Following the upset win, there was no let down for the WolfPack, who got right to work against Prairie State College (1-3). Madison College used back-to-back doubles from Ava Stahl and Mackenna Schultz to score the game's first run in the bottom of the first, which also included Schultz scoring on a passed ball to make it 2-0.

The Pioneers cut the differential in half in the third, and it remained a 2-1 until the home half of the fifth. Madison Coubal led off with a hard ground ball back up the middle, and two batters later, Rylee Rogers reached safely on a bunt. Following a successful sacrifice bunt by Jenna Redders to advance the runners, Stahl came through with a clutch two-out infield single that ricocheted off the pitcher and allowed Coubal and Rogers to race in for a 4-1 advantage.

Prairie State College did make things interesting in the top of the seventh, using two WolfPack errors and a single to load the bases, however, Madison College kept PSC at bay thanks to an offensive interference call, a caught stealing by catcher Brooke Anderson, and a game-ending ground out to Ella Wyskochil in the pitcher's circle.

Wyskochil (1-0) secured her first win of the season and the second of her career. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native, limited the Pioneers to a run on four hits and three walks, while striking out two batters.

While the WolfPack bats were held in check by PSC pitching, they made good use of their six hits. Stahl, a former Wautoma HS athlete, was tops with two hits, two runs batted in, and a run scored. Schultz followed in the lineup with a hit, a run scored, and one driven in. Coubal and Rogers each had a hit and a run scored.

Madison College has won seven straight against PSC and lead the all-time series by a 9-2 margin.
