MADISON, WISC. - The top seed in the
Region 4 Division II District B Tournament left little doubt during Wednesday's quarterfinal match against 15th-seeded Bryant & Stratton College, winning in a three-set sweep inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack earned set wins of 25-17, 25-18, 25-10 over the Bobcats to advance to this weekend's semifinals. Sophomores
Addyson McHugh and
Courtney Gorum paced the Pack attack, while the home team also racked up ten aces as they improved to 10-1 all-time against BSC. This marked the second year in a row Madison College defeated Bryant & Stratton College in the quarterfinals.
The WolfPack held a lead of four or five points - thanks in part to back-to-back aces from freshman
Tricia Klum - for most of the first set until Gorum's kill to make it 12-7 ignited a 4-1 surge to build an eight-point advantage. They were able to coast from their to claim the opening set behind six kills from Gorum. McHugh closed out the set with consecutive kills as she built momentum towards the second set.
The Spring Grove, Minnesota, native dominated the early stages of the second set with three kills and a block before Bryant & Stratton College (9-17) took a timeout with the WolfPack leading 9-2. Madison College continued to shine from the service line with consecutive aces by second year players
Faith Radecke and
Brooke Anderson, the latter coming before and after another Bobcats timeout with the home team on top by a 19-11 differential. Down 23-13, Bryant & Stratton College made the region's second overall seed sweat, winning five of the next six points. Another McHugh kill, her sixth of the set, gave Madison College set point before a BSC attack error put the Pack ahead by two sets.
The third and final set featured a 7-4 Madison College lead when freshman
Bella Vitaioli terminated an attack to start a 5-0 and force the Bobcats into another timeout. The advantage swelled to 15 when another four-point swing made it 22-7 after
Sammy Johnson set up McHugh for another successful swing. Freshman libero
Cora Webster served up the team's tenth ace to reach match point, and fittingly, McHugh crushed another kill to finish off the win.
The 5'10" outside and right side hitter finished with 13 kills - surpassing the 600 kills mark for her career - and a season-best .522 attack percentage.
Gorum was right behind with a dozen kills as the program's all-time leader in that category reached the 800-kills plateau. The native of Chesapeake, Virginia, hit .375 and registered her 14th double-double with ten digs.
Vitaioli and sophomore
Amber Horn both added six kills, with Vitaioli, a former Janesville Craig HS athlete, matching Gorum with a ten digs to lead the team.
Anderson finished with 24 assists and three aces, while Klum tallied 13 helpers and two aces. Radecke, a Stoughton, Wisconsin, native, tied Anderson with three aces.
