MADISON, WISC. - One day after making their return to the
NJCAA Division II Poll, the 25th-ranked Madison College volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 sweep over Kankakee Community College inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack remained perfect against Region 4 opponents with their 25-14, 25-8, 25-19 victory, narrowing the gap in the all-time series to 4-3 in favor of the Cavaliers.
Madison College raced out to a 6-1 lead in the first set, only to see the Cavaliers rattle off four straight points to pull within 6-5. The WolfPack slowly pulled away throughout the rest of the set, which closed with a 6-0 run.
Kankakee Community College (14-8) held a narrow 4-2 edge early in the second set when the Pack used a
Courtney Gorum kill to start an 8-0 surge that included back-to-back aces from sophomore
Faith Radecke. Another 8-0 run later in the set blew the score wide open as Gorum terminated another kill to reach 21-6. Her eighth kill of the set completed the 17-point win.
In the final set, Madison College turned an 8-7 lead into an 18-9 advantage thanks to another impressive service run from sophomore
Brooke Anderson, who also produced consecutive aces, and a solo block by freshman
MaKayla Weisner that forced a KCC timeout. The Cavaliers eventually pulled within five that made Madison College coach
Mallory Stone call timeout with a 20-15 lead. Side out volleyball the rest of the way came to a conclusion when
Emma Carpenter came up with a block and
Alexandria Smith hammered a match-ending kill, just her third kill in 2024.
Gorum, a native of Chesapeake, Virginia, and a transfer from UW-Madison, posted 18 kills and a .500 attack percentage. She now sits at 654 career kills to trail the program's all-time leader Paige Hostetler by 41 kills. Gorum also finished the match with team-highs of four aces and nine digs.
Fellow sophomore
Addyson McHugh surpassed the double-digit plateau with 11 kills while hitting at a .250 clip. The 5-10 outside/right side hitter now boasts a dozen matches with ten or more kills in 2024, and holds a one kill lead over Gorum for the team-lead on the season with 214.
Setter
Brooke Anderson, a Plain, Wisconsin, native, established a new career-high with 35 assists and has surpassed the 30-assist mark three times this fall, including each of the past two contests. Anderson also racked up a pair of aces and tied for the team lead with nine digs.
Weisner and Horn each had 3.0 blocks. Radecke added three aces.
Overall, Madison College amassed 37 kills, ten attack errors, and a .287 hitting efficiency. The WolfPack hit .500 in the second set and registered 14 kills in each of the second and third sets. The team's 12 aces mark the tenth time this season with ten or more, and snap a six-match stretch with fewer than ten aces. The match also concluded with nine blocks and 48 digs for the home team.
