MADISON, WISC. - What a difference a year can make for the Madison College men's soccer team. The WolfPack closed out a 9-4-2 regular season Tuesday night with a 2-0 blanking of Harper College at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East and were able to celebrate knowing they will be part of the upcoming Region 4 Division II Tournament. That moment came one year and a day from when the Pack ended the 2023 regular season with a road win they believed would get them into the postseason, only to have it pulled out from under them. Freshman
Victor Dalum recorded yet another shut out, while sophomore
Bryan Garcia and
Carter Uhlmann provided the offense en route to just the tenth win in 37 all-time meetings with the Hawks.
As a scoreless match moved into it's 44' when second year transfer
Alfredo Herrera bent a pass into the penalty box that was headed out by the Harper College defense. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the header went right to Garcia, and the midfielder from Madison, Wisconsin, collected it off his chest and reached his right foot out to boot a shot towards goal. The kick snuck between the left post and the diving goalkeeper for the game's first score and Garcia's second goal of the year.
Looking to pad their one-goal advantage, Madison College was able to post another scoring strike early in the second half. After a deflection near midfield sent the soccer ball towards the WolfPack's offensive zone, freshman João Forte quickly played a pass up ahead to Uhlmann, who had sprinted through the Hawks back line. The Oregon, Wisconsin, native chipped a 49' shot over a sliding goalkeeper and into the net for his sixth goal of the season, half of which have come over the last two outings. Forte now boasts three assists and a team-leading 23 total points.
Dalum and the WolfPack fended off four more shots, including one on goal, the rest of the match to keep the clean sheet intact. That was the only save for the native of Odense, Denmark, who saw four other shots the entire night for his fifth full time shut out of the season. Overall, Madison College has held eight opponents without a goal and has allowed just 0.87 goals against average.
The WolfPack came through with a 12-5 advantage in total shots, a 6-1 lead in shots on goal, and an 11-2 edge in corner kicks.
Harper College (5-6-2) still leads the head-to-head series by a 24-10-3 tally.
