SOUTH HOLLAND, ILL. - No matter what the Madison College men's soccer team did Wednesday night in their Region 4 match with South Suburban College, the host Bulldogs always came up with an answer. The WolfPack held one-goal leads on three separate occasions in the match until a goal in the waning seconds by SSC resulted in a 4-3 loss for the Pack. The setback ends a seven-match non-losing streak for Madison College, who now trail in the all-time series by a 3-5-1 tally.
One game after scoring in the opening seconds, Madison College put a ball in the net in the opening minutes when sophomore
Carter Uhlmann took advantage of a fortunate bounce to put the WolfPack up 1-0 in the 3'. A header on a free ball near the top of the penalty arc sent the ball in the direction of the SSC goalkeeper; however, a deflection off a defender's foot and a slight touch with the keepers hand bounced the ball right in front of an open net where Uhlmann was able to tap it in. It's the third goal of the season and sixth of his career for the native of Oregon, Wisconsin.
Two minutes later, South Suburban College (5-7-1) placed a free kick into the penalty box, and after the ball was pinballed around for several seconds with the Pack unable to clear, the Bulldogs lofted a standing bicycle kick over goalkeeper
Victor Dalum to even the score at 1-1 in the 5'.
The wild scoring frenzy to open the match continued in the 6' when a handball in the penalty box resulted in a penalty kick, which freshman midfielder
Rodrigo Lasso buried with a low kick towards the left post. It was the first career goal for the former Beaver Dam HS athlete.
The game remained 2-1 until the 32' when a misplayed pass from
Damo Lovell to Dalum ended up in the Bulldogs possession and with Dalum out of position. South Suburban scored to make it 2-2 going into halftime.
Madison College took its third lead of the match in the 60' as Uhlmann used some impressive footwork to beat his defender to the endline. A pass towards the goalie box was redirected into the air, allowing freshman João Forte to head it into the goal. Forte, a product of Eagle School in Richland Center, Wisconsin, leads the Pack with nine goals and has scored in six of the team's 11 matches.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs came through with their third equalizer of the match on a header off a corner kick in the 78' to tie the score at 3-3. With time winding down, Madison College earned a corner kick, but when
Jacob Unger's kick was punched out by the goalkeeper, it triggered a mad dash by South Suburban. The Bulldogs were able to work the ball quickly down the pitch and score the game-winner in the final minute on a goal by defender Elder Perez. The WolfPack did scramble to get two more looks at the net in the final seconds, only to have a corner kick denied and a rebound shot sail wide right as time expired.
For the match, SSC owned a 13-8 edge in total shots and a 9-5 lead in shots on goal, while the WolfPack generated a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. Dalum finished with five saves and four goals allowed.
