#10 WolfPack closes home tournament on three-game win streak

Madison College splits pair of matches against ranked opponents

MADISON, WISC. - When the dust settled from a busy seven-team, 14-match Madison College Volleyball Tournament on Friday and Saturday inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium, the host WolfPack had finished with a 3-1 record that included a win over a ranked opponent. Madison College, ranked #10 in the NJCAA Division II Poll, opened with a rough three-set loss to #15 Lincoln Land Community College, before rebounding to sweep Div. III #13 Minnesota West CTC to complete the opening day. Saturday's slate ended with a sweep of the Lakeland University JV and a four-set victory against Spoon River College. The tournament field also included Bryant & Stratton College and Milwaukee Area Technical College.

Match #1 (Friday): #15 Lincoln Land Community College 3, #10 Madison College 0 (25-17, 25-20, 32-30)

Madison College was slow out of the gates in the Top-15 matchup with the Loggers, who limited the WolfPack to single digit kills in the first two sets. The third set was a back-and-forth battle that needed extra points to decide, however, the Pack was unable to prolong the match with a 32-30 final set loss.

Lincoln Land Community College (16-4) finished the match with 46 kills, ten aces, and 53 digs, while Madison College tallied 29 kills, two aces, and 29 digs. The home team did utilize a season-high 14 blocks to keep themselves in the match.

Freshman Courtney Gorum was the only player to reach double-figures in kills with 13 as she hit .310 on 29 attempts. Sophomore Tyra Anderson was next with eight kills and a .273 attack percentage. 

Second year setter Daryn Anderson tallied 28 assists and a team-leading eight digs. 

Freshman Amber Horn was stout on the defensive side of the net with a career-high six blocks.

Madison College is now winless in three all-time meetings with LLCC. The teams are scheduled to play each other again at the Parkland College Tournament on September 29.

Match #2 (Saturday): #10 Madison College 3, #13 Minnesota West Community & Technical College 0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-17)

Facing their second ranked foe of the day, Madison College was dominant in a three-set sweep of the Lady Jays. The home team finished the match with 36 kills and a .305 attack percentage, nine aces, and a dozen blocks. After amassing 11 kills in the opening set, the WolfPack exploded for a 16 kills and hit at a .464 clip in the second set. They closed out Minnesota West Community & Technical College (15-6) with nine kills in the third to improve to 8-1 all-time in head-to-head matches.

Gorum, a 6'3" middle blocker/right side hitter hit a career-best .588 with 11 kills on 17 attempts. She also finished with a team-leading four blocks.

Freshman Addyson McHugh and second year outside and right side hitter Tyra Anderson each had seven kills and efficiencies over .230.

Schaefer, a former Wisconsin Height HS athlete, had 31 assists and three kills.

Sophomore libero Kendall Weisensel collected ten digs and tied Anderson with three aces. The team's defensive effort also included three blocks each by Gabby Hack and Amber Horn.

Match #3 (Saturday): #10 Madison College 3, Lakeland University JV 0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-20)

The WolfPack came out firing on all cylinders to start the second day, hammering home 13 kills on a .500 attack percentage in the opening set against the Muskies. They finished with 32 kills, 12 aces, 11 blocks, and 32 digs in the sweep that improved their all-time mark against Lakeland University to 12-0.

Addyson McHugh, a native of Spring Grove, Minnesota, and Tyra Anderson, a Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, product, each went for seven kills to pace the Pack. Courtney Gorum played just one set and registered five kills on six attempts.

Daryn Schaefer had 27 assists, one kill, one ace, two blocks, and five digs. Kendall Weisensel, who also hails from Sun Prairie, was tops with four aces and seven digs, the latter of which was matched by fellow sophomore Gabby Hack.

Amber Horn, a middle blocker and right side hitter from New Glarus, Wisconsin, denied five opposing attacks above the net.

Match #4 (Saturday): #10 Madison College 3, Spoon River College 1 (25-22, 14-25,  25-15, 25-13)

In the weekend's final match, Madison College had to overcome a sloppy second set to earn a third consecutive match victory. Following a very competitive opening set, the Snappers took full control of the match in the second with an 11-point set win. However, the WolfPack regained its composure and sent away Spoon River College (8-18) with lopsided wins in sets three and four in the first meeting all-time with SRC. 

Madison College totaled double-digit kills in each set, including a match-high 17 in the third set with a .615 attack percentage. Their 57 total kills is the second-highest output of the season, while the .348 efficiency ranks third on the year. They also took advantage of ten aces, marking their fifth such match of the season.

Tyra Anderson matched a career-best with 17 kills and hit .556 on 27 attempts. In addition, she served up a season-high five aces. Gorum trailed right behind with 15 kills and a .500 efficiency. Also in double-figures was Addyson McHugh with 13 kills and hitting at a .300 clip. 

Schaefer posted 56 assists, her second-highest total of the fall. Weisensel keyed the back line of defense with 14 digs, giving her 11 matches with ten or more digs.

Madison College (14-4) will host their first single match of the season on Wednesday, September 27 against in-state rival Bryant & Stratton College (3-10). In their short history, the WolfPack is 6-1 and riding a four-match win streak over the Bobcats. First serve inside H.
