MADISON, WISC. - Two goals in the final seven minutes of the first half was all the Madison College women's score team needed to score a 2-0 win in a Region 4 tilt with Kankakee Community College on Tuesday at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East.
Savi Pursley and
Delaney Bracken each tallied their first goals of the season, while goalkeeper
Morgan Thompson earned her first shutout of 2023. The WolfPack are 1-0-1 all-time against the Cavaliers.
Madison College dominated the soccer ball on their home pitch, amassing a 19-1 differential in shots on goal and a 28-3 edge in total shots. Despite that, the WolfPack struggled to find the net for the game's first 38 minutes.
A turnover near midfield kept the ball in Madison's control on their offensive half, and a perfectly executed give-and-go between Pursely and Bracken ended with a quick tap of the soccer ball to get past a diving goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead in the 39'. The goal for Pursley, a Madison, Wisconsin, native, is her first career scoring strike, and comes in her 18th career match.
A corner kick in the 42' was perfectly placed by sophomore
Kierstin McHugh, and allowed the 5'11" Bracken to out-jump the competition for a header over the goalkeeper.Â
While the offense continued to seek scoring opportunities, the defense completely kept the visiting Cavaliers (1-4-1) in check. After posting one shot in the first half, KCC sent a kick wide in the 64' and then saw Thompson come up with a save on their only shot on goal of the match in the 89'. Thompson owns five career shutouts.
Bracken, a native of Monona, Wisconsin, was tops on the team with four shots on goal, followed by three each from
Atziry Ocampo,
Camille Gilbertson, and
Emma McGlynn.
