KANKAKEE, ILL. - The
#8-ranked Madison College volleyball team made quick work of a long trip Saturday with a pair of sweeps over Region 4 opponents at the Kankakee Community College Triangular. The WolfPack opened with a 3-0 win against South Suburban College, and followed it up with a 3-0 blanking of the host Cavaliers to extend their current win streak to nine consecutive matches.
Match #1: #8 Madison College 3, South Suburban College 0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-13)
Madison College posted a season-best 11 blocks and took full advantage of 17 attack errors to hold South Suburban College (6-6) to a .043 attack percentage en route to sweeping the Bulldogs. The WolfPack finished with 26 kills and a .286 hitting efficiency, while also serving up 14 aces for their second-highest total of the season.
Madison College improved offensively as the match went on and eventually finished the third set with nine kills, one error, and hitting at a .533 clip.Â
Sophomore outside hitter/right side
Tyra Anderson led the charge with eight kills on 21 attack attempts. First year middle blocker/right side
Courtney Gorum was next with seven kills and a .316 attack percentage. The 6'3" Gorum also led the defensive play at the net with four blocks.
Second year setter
Daryn Schaefer posted 23 assists, and sophomore libero
Kendall Weisensel was tops with eight digs. Schaefer,
Sophia Venne, and
Alexandria Smith all tied for team-high honors with three aces as the Pack saw seven different players register an ace.
Madison College is 2-0 all-time against SSC, with wins in six straight sets over the Bulldogs.
Match #2: #8 Madison College 3, Kankakee Community College 0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-15)
The WolfPack averaged a dozen kills per set and overcame 17 attack errors in the day's second match to sweep Kankakee Community College (4-3). Madison College opened strong with 14 kills and a .256 efficiency in the first set, but struggled with ten attack errors in the second set to hit at a .000 clip. They rebounded in the final set with 12 kills and a .300 percentage. Additionally, the visitors had seven aces, three blocks, and a season-best digs total in a three-set match with 42.
Libero/outside hitter
Kendall Weisensel, a native of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, amassed 14 digs to match her season-best total in a three-setter. In all, ten WolfPack players tracked down at least one dig in the win.
Courtney Gorum, a native of Chesapeake, Virginia, was tops offensively with nine kills, followed by eight from
Tyra Anderson, another former Sun Prairie HS athlete. Nine different players had a kill in the sweep.
Schaefer dished out 30 assists and added seven digs. Freshman
MacKenzie Thom and sophomore
Sophia Venne each had two aces.
Despite the win, the WolfPack still trail the Cavaliers by a 4-2 count in the all-time series, with Saturday's meeting being the first match since 2010.

Madison College (9-1) heads south to Normal, Illinois, for the Heartland Community College Tournament on September 15-16. The WolfPack will play John A. Logan College (7-0) and Rock Valley College (8-2) on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., respectively. Saturday's schedule begins with a 10:00 a.m. match against North Iowa Area Community College (8-7), and finishes with a noon contest against #4 Parkland College (18-2). Madison College is 2-1 all-time against the Vols, 28-44-1 against the long-time Region 4 rival Golden Eagles, 3-4 against the Trojans, and 1-3 against the Cobras.
