MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's volleyball team took care of business in their home debut Wednesday, sweeping a pair of Region 4 matches in a triangular inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack opened with a 3-0 defeat of Morton College, and then returned in the final match to upend Highland Community College in three sets. The wins extend the WolfPack's early season win streak to five matches, as well as give the Pack wins in 15 consecutive sets. The wins came in front of numerous youth and prep teams in attendance for WolfPack Youth Night.
Match #1: Madison College 3, Morton College 0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-18)
Sophomore
Daryn Schaefer opened the match with an ace and the WolfPack raced out to a 7-0 in the opening set. A 4-0 run pushed the lead to 20-10 as the home team closed out the set with nine of the final 13 points. After the Panthers went ahead 3-0 to begin the second set, Madison College answered wth eight consecutive points, including three straight aces from freshman
Courtney Gorum. A 6-0 surge later in the set pushed the differential to 14-4. First year middle blocker/right side
Amber Horn contributed a block and a kill down the stretch to give the Pack another 11-point win. The final set was much more competitive as the teams stayed within three points of each other until the WolfPack put together a 13-4 closing run that included a pair of kills from freshman
Addyson McHugh.
Madison College finished with 33 kills and a .338 attack percentage after posting 13 kills in the first and third sets. They added eight aces and six blocks.
McHugh, a native of Spring Grove, Minnesota, led the offense with nine kills and hit a season-best .412 on 17 attempts. She also tied for the team-lead in digs with eight. Sophomore
Tyra Anderson was right behind McHugh with eight kills and hit a team-best .533.
Schaefer posted 20 assists, while
Hope Hesselberg added 13. Schaefer, a former Wisconsin Heights HS athlete, also matched McHugh's eight digs and served up two aces. Gorum led in aces with three, while
Kendall Weisensel notched a pair.
The WolfPack improves to 4-0 all-time against Morton College (0-6), with all four matches coming over the last two seasons.
Match #2: Madison College 3, Highland Community College 0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-22)
Madison College returned to the court to square off with Highland Community College (3-5), who had also just swept Morton College. The WolfPack built an early 6-3 advantage, but the Cougars stormed back in the opening set to take an 8-6 lead. Seven consecutive points turned the tide for the home team, who went on an 11-1 run to force an HCC timeout. After finishing off the first set, the Pack put together runs of five, four, four, and five to win the match and the triangular.
For a second straight match, the home team registered 33 kills, while hitting at a .232 clip. They added a season-high nine aces and had seven blocks.
Courtney Gorum, a 6'3" middle blocker/right side, smashed a dozen kills and owned a .364 efficiency. Fellow first year Addison McHugh tallied her second double-double of the young season with ten kills and a team-high 12 digs.
Setters
Daryn Schaefer and
Hope Hesselberg had 18 and 12 assists, respectively, and Schaefer put together her second four-ace match of the fall. Hesselberg served up a pair, as well.
Sophomores
Sophia Venne and
Gabby Hack each had two blocks.
Madison College still trails the all-time series with the Cougars by a 17-27-1 margin, however, they have now won five straight matches and seven of the past eight meetings.

The WolfPack will take on Triton College (0-2) at 3:00 p.m. and then square off with Joliet Junior College (2-5) at 7:00 p.m. Madison College has dominated the head-to-head series with the Trojans, riding a 22-match win streak to a 22-4 lead in the series, which has not been played since 2019. The Wolves, meanwhile, snapped a 20-match win streak for the WolfPack with a pair of victories last season, however, Madison College is still up 25-4 all-time. Triton College and Joliet Junior College will play the 5:00 p.m. match.
